The past three weeks have been a daily migraine, starting with the switch to HRT from birth control pills. I’m off the hormones now but need them bc I’m in the midst of perimenopause. But! on a day before the pain spiked up again, I did this. It’s a work in progress, made with painted nails and wool and an embroidered vintage handkerchief that reads “stitching up my wounds.” If anyone has ideas of how to sand a shit-ton of nails at once (so I can spray paint them), can you please let me know? I’m excited to make this huge.

Work in progress. embroidery that says „stitching up my wounds“ on 4 linen/cotton squares Spent the past weeks mending things (sweaters , quilts) while I recovered from surgery, and pondered how what we do in the name of healing ourselves can do so much damage.

@rljablo

Rachael Jablo is a chronically ill, Jewish, queer, Berlin-based American artist and educator working with storytelling, photography, installation, and collage in analog and digital processes to discuss illness and gender. Her work has been seen recently in a solo exhibition at Graz’s Forum Stadtpark, and USC’s Hoyt Gallery, and in group exhibitions at the Institut Français in Berlin and the Women’s History Museum in Stockholm, Torrance Museum in LA. She has been featured in Ever-Emerging Magazine, on WNYC’s The Takeaway, and Slate, and is an active member of the EndoViolence Collective. Her photographic monograph, My days of losing words, was published with Kehrer Verlag in 2013. She received at Neustart Kultur Grant for Innovative Arts in 2021 for her work The Hysteria Project. She is part of the EU-wide #ENDOs art and narrative medicine project running through 2025. She was the keynote speaker at the Endometriosis (R)Evolution conference at the University of Graz, Austria in 2024.

Rachael Jablo ist eine chronisch kranke, jüdische, queere, in Berlin lebende amerikanische Künstlerin und Pädagogin, die sich mit Storytelling, Fotografie, Installationen und Collagen in analogen und digitalen Prozessen beschäftigt, um Krankheit und Geschlecht zu thematisieren. Ihre Arbeiten waren kürzlich in einer Einzelausstellung im Forum Stadtpark in Graz und in der Hoyt Gallery der USC sowie in Gruppenausstellungen im Institut Français in Berlin, im Frauenhistorischen Museum in Stockholm und im Torrance Museum in LA zu sehen. Sie wurde im Ever-Emerging Magazine, in WNYCs The Takeaway und in Slate vorgestellt und ist aktives Mitglied des EndoViolence Collective. Ihre fotografische Monografie My days of losing words wurde 2013 im Kehrer Verlag veröffentlicht. Für ihre Arbeit „The Hysteria Project“ erhielt sie 2021 das Neustart Kultur Grant for Innovative Arts. Sie ist Teil des EU-weiten Kunst- und narrativen Medizinprojekts #ENDOs, das bis 2025 läuft. A while ago, I asked people their associations with the word #hysterical - this installation is what came of that. So much gets reflected at us by people in our lives, doctors, society, because of attitudes about illness, especially gendered illnesses like #endometriosis . This is the work I’ll be showing at the Breaking This Silence exhibition opening 15/7 at the Institut Français on Ku‘damm in Berlin. My discussion in the @endo.violence.collective think-in on the 16th will be about the shame and gendered language around endometriosis. please come!

Hello! I am applying for grants to start up The Hysteria Project again (and turn it into a book) and I’m looking for families (a broad definition) who are dealing with various gynecological disorders to share their stories. This is anything from #fibroids to #gynecologicalcancer (and its preventative treatment!) to #PCOS to #endometriosis , or undiagnosed #menstrualdisorders . All countries and backgrounds welcome but English is a must. Please help me find people- if I have storytellers lined up, it will be easier to get the money.
