From the beautiful mind of Andrew Mackelvie comes Many Worlds, a large format improvising supergroup. We are just about to release a debut album, it sounds amazing, and I hope you can find it/buy it/hear it. We are playing Saturday 28 Feb at the seahorse and I hope you can come support us!

Making this album was a true delight, an artistic highlight for me, and the result is incredibly deep and beautiful. I’m so grateful to be part of Andrew’s creative universe and to have the chance to help bring this music to life.

Congratulations to @aquakultre on the release of this beautiful new LP “1783”. It’s truly an incredible piece of work, brimming with musicality, artistry, and purpose. Lance is an incredible force and I hope everyone in the world gets to hear all these songs.

I’m so proud to have played guitar on “1783”; being part of those sessions a year ago was a musical highlight for me, and being part of the mix on a work of art like this is an honour. Thank you Lance the invitation for the trust and the friendship! Thank you Erin Costelo for being an extraordinary producer. And thanks to Jackson, Jaye, Graham, Ibiko, and Thomas for being such great musicians and such a pleasure to work with.

A picture of Carnaval in Olinda told through all the videos I have of this one song. Rest in peace Tom Dorward ❤️, a hugely influential Halifax figure who died last week. Sending my love and sympathy to the countless people who knew and loved and relied on Tom, whether inside the walls of The Halifax Folklore Centre or beyond.
…..
I met Tom when as a 13 year old he taught me how to properly change the strings on my newly rented electric guitar. When I was 18 he and his wife Marla gave me my first job sweeping the Folklore Centre floors, dusting and tuning guitars and tidying the basement. I worked there for 9 years and the influence that time had on me is immense. Tom was a great friend, a mentor, a father figure, and a teacher to me. He taught me a lot about guitars, and to love Mavis Staples, Taj Mahal & Jimmy Reed records; he taught me that I should own a banjo, and be able to do math in my head. But most important of all was his steady kindness, and his amazing way of working that I witnessed again and again. He was a remarkable force of consistency, diligence, care and integrity. He was a master of his craft. I watched him work and could feel that there was a profound value in simply staying put and staying at it. He and Marla have lovingly run their shop since 1971 for example, and it’ll stay open as a testament to that way, their way.

I’m so sad for the Dorward family and for the huge extended Folklore Centre family as well. But I’ll be ever grateful for Tom’s love and influence in my life, and I’ll carry that forward with me wherever I go.

We are having a concert in memory of my late father Steven Burns this Sunday the 20th of October at St. George’s church from 4-5pm. All are welcome to come and remember the man by listening to some performances of music that he loved. There’ll be a little reception in the church hall afterward.

He was pretty insistent that nothing too ponderous or funereal happen in his memory, but filling a beautiful space with some of his favourite people and some of his favourite sounds will be just the thing.

Steven A. M. Burns (1941-2024)

Writing to let you know of the death of my dad. He died peacefully at his home last week surrounded by close family. He was a beautiful person and a great father, and so many things. I’m grateful for everything he showed me in our lives together.

Thank you to all of you who are showing, (and will yet show) so much love and support to me and my family in this moment. It’s deeply appreciated. And I also want to send my care and condolences out to so many of you who knew and loved him just as I did. We can all celebrate and remember him together: a great person, a great teacher, an artist, an example, a mentor, a friend.

He was always so supportive of me in all my phases - as an athlete, an artist, a person - he never showed judgement, but instead only ever showed support. His last day on earth was beautiful and we sang together as a family, and the last words he shared with me:

“Thanks for the music, kid.”

Finishing August with a beautiful capoeira roda in the summer sun. Thx to all the students of Dendê Halifax who make this group so special. I teach every Tuesday (7pm) and Friday (6pm) for all levels if anyone wants to come learn about this art and be part of this community. The door is always open!
