There’s a different weight to coaching at the @usnavalacademy. Yes, Coach Cindy Timchal is responsible for developing great lacrosse players and building a winning program. But the young women she coaches are preparing for something far bigger than what happens on the field.
They will go on to lead Sailors and Marines. They’ll be trusted with people, with decisions, and with responsibility that carries real consequences.
I asked @ci_ndy1197 what it feels like to know that the lessons she teaches, about leadership, resilience, accountability, and taking care of the person next to you, will follow these women long after they play their final game.

One of my favorite parts of our conversation.

New episode of The Resilient Life Podcast is out now!
And this one was a little more personal for me.

Coach Cindy Timchal is quite simply one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of collegiate sports. Eight national championships. Seven of them consecutive. A Hall of Famer. The first Division I lacrosse coach, man or woman, to reach 600 career wins. And nearly 20 years ago, she took on an entirely different challenge: building the women’s lacrosse program at the United States Naval Academy.

But as impressive as the wins and championships are, what I’ve come to appreciate most is the way she leads.

And now I get to watch her help shape my own daughter and her teammates, not only as athletes, but as young women preparing to lead Sailors and Marines.

We talked about what decades of coaching have taught her, why resilience and leadership are built in the everyday moments, and the philosophy that has guided her along the way: “Let’s love each other and lacrosse a little bit more each day.”

Really loved sitting down with Coach for this one.

On my flight home Friday, this gentleman walked past me wearing a World War II veteran hat. I thanked him for his service as he went by, but almost immediately wished I had asked him more. So when we landed, I waited for him to get off the plane. He told me his name is George “Middy” Middlebrook. He’s 98 years old. He served 24 years in the U.S. Army, retired as a Master Sergeant (E-8), and his service spanned World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Three wars. Twenty-four years of service. We sat there for a few minutes while he told me pieces of his story, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how easily I could have just let him walk by. The World War II generation is leaving us far too quickly, and with them go stories and firsthand memories of a time that shaped our country and our world. We won’t have many more opportunities to hear directly from the men and women who lived them. There are extraordinary people all around us carrying stories we know nothing about. Sometimes all it takes is noticing the hat, asking the question, and taking a few minutes to listen.

Really grateful I waited for Middy. 🇺🇸 by @rmanion

How do you keep someone’s legacy alive without letting grief define your life?

I had the opportunity to ask @rmanion this question at the @militaryinfluencer Conference.

Ryan has spent years honoring the life and legacy of her brother, 1stLt Travis Manion, while also building a life, family, and mission of her own. So when I had the chance to sit down with her, I wanted to ask about something that I think so many people who have experienced loss wrestle with:

How do you continue to honor someone you love without allowing the loss of them to become the defining story of your own life?

Her perspective on this is worth hearing. ❤️ by @rmanion

Today is Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. A day to honor the families who carry the weight of a name, a story, and a love that never leaves them. Sending love to my fellow Gold Star families today and always. 🇺🇸❤️ taken in Section 60, Arlington National Cemetery by @rmanion

Throughout the month of September we will continue to remember 9/11 through the @travismanionfoundation 9/11 Heroes Runs, and honor the service and sacrifice of those who stepped forward that day and in the years that followed.

Grateful for the TMF community who continues to show the rest of the country what it looks like when we come together to remember. 🇺🇸 by @rmanion

This weekend took me from Houston, Texas, to Annapolis, Maryland, for two of more than 45 @travismanionfoundation 9/11 Heroes Runs that have already taken place across the country this September.
Nearly 6,000 people showed up in Houston. Another 1,500 in Annapolis. Different cities, different communities, but the same reason for being there: to remember those we lost on September 11th and to honor the men and women who answered the call to serve in the years that followed. Standing in those crowds, I kept coming back to something I shared in my remarks in both cities. Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, 2001. There are young adults who have no memory of that day because they weren’t alive yet. And eventually, there will be no one left who can tell you firsthand where they were, what they saw, or how it felt to watch our country change in a matter of hours. That means remembrance cannot depend on memory alone.
The responsibility belongs to all of us. Those who lived through that day, and those who came after it. We have to keep telling the stories. We have to keep saying their names. We have to teach the next generation not only what happened, but who stepped forward because of it, what they sacrificed, and why it still matters. We still have 55 more 9/11 Heroes Runs to go this September. And after seeing thousands of people; firefighters in their gear, police officers, veterans, Midshipmen, college athletes, families, kids, show up this weekend, I left feeling incredibly hopeful. Because 25 years later, people are still showing up. Some remember exactly where they were on September 11th. Some weren’t even born yet. But they stood beside one another, ran for names they may never have known personally, and became part of carrying those stories forward. That’s how we make sure 25 years from now, America still remembers. Incredible gratitude for everyone who came out to participate in cities and towns across the country. 🇺🇸 by @rmanion
