I miss when R&B actually sounded like THIS 🔥

Tyrese went off on Soul Train in 2003 performing his smash hit "How You Gonna Act Like That" This classic peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #3 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, becoming one of the biggest R&B records of the early 2000s. It helped push his album I Wanna Go There to massive success and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

Who had this on repeat and still does in 2026? 🔥

20 years later, The Evolution of Robin Thicke still sounds like the album that changed Robin Thicke’s career.

Released on October 3, 2006, his second album topped the R&B albums chart, peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and earned Platinum certification. Produced mainly by Robin Thicke and Pro J, with additional production from The Neptunes, it also featured Faith Evans, Lil Wayne and Pharrell.

Then “Lost Without U” took everything higher. The slow jam reached No. 14 on the Hot 100, No. 11 in the UK and spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the R&B chart. Smooth falsetto, honest songwriting and grown R&B done right. This was the album that made Robin Thicke a star.

You can keep ONE India Arie song. Which one?

For over 2 decades, she’s given R&B and neo-soul something deeply human: self-love, healing, truth, vulnerability, purpose and peace. Records like “Video,” “Brown Skin,” “Ready for Love,” “The Truth” and “I Am Not My Hair” didn’t just soundtrack moments, they reminded people to see themselves differently.

Today we’re giving India Arie her flowers while she can receive them. May this next chapter bring her the same love, light and healing that her music has poured into so many of us. 🎂🖤

Pound for pound, Joe is one of R&B’s coldest vocalists. 🎤🔥

Joe came to Verzuz with heavyweight vocals and a heavyweight catalogue. Some singers perform the song. Joe still LIVES inside the song.

Your favourite track from Pain Is Love?

25 years later, Pain Is Love remains an early-2000s rap and R&B classic.

Released through Murder Inc. and Def Jam, his third studio album debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, selling 361,000 copies in its opening week. It went triple platinum in the US, reached No. 3 in the UK and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album.

With Irv Gotti shaping the sound and Ja Rule bringing the grit, melody and emotion, Pain Is Love became a defining album of the early 2000s. It captured Ja at his peak and Murder Inc. at its best. Give Ja and Irv their flowers they helped define an era. 💿🔥

1994 was overflowing with male R&B greatness. The harmonies, the slow jams, the heartbreak records, the swagger… everybody brought something different, and somehow the year just kept producing classics.

Looking back now, we really were spoiled. These weren’t just songs for the moment either, 30+ years later, people still know the words, still run them back and still have memories attached to them. 🔥🔥
