As the sun sets on another remarkable Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, we are left grateful for the people, the stories, and the extraordinary automobiles that make this event unlike any other.

Among a field of truly exceptional competitors, it was especially rewarding to share the experience with Rick Mershad during his first Pebble Beach appearance. Watching his 1964 Porsche 904, Chassis 904-060, cross the podium and earn 3rd in class in the O-1 Postwar Racing Class was a moment none of us will soon forget.

Pebble Beach is about more than awards. It’s about preserving history, celebrating passion, and honoring the legacy of these incredible machines. Congratulations to Rick and to all who brought their cars and their stories to this world-class stage.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche—known to many as “Butzi”—considered the 904 Carrera GTS his signature creation, even more so than the 911. Designed from concept to prototype in just six months, the 904 successfully combined racing performance with road-going usability, creating a bridge between Porsche’s pure competition cars and its production sports cars.

To bring the vision to life, Porsche partnered with Heinkel Flugzeugbau, a German aircraft manufacturer renowned for its expertise in lightweight composite construction. The result was a remarkably advanced machine featuring a fiberglass body, mid-engine layout, and exceptional performance.

Weighing just 1,459 pounds and powered by the final evolution of Porsche’s legendary 2.0-liter Four-Cam Type 587/3 engine, the 904 produced 180 horsepower, reached a top speed of 165 mph, and sprinted from 0–60 mph in under six seconds.

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful race cars ever built, the 904 also proved itself in competition, earning class and overall victories in GT racing, rallies, and hill climbs around the world.

More than a successful race car, the 904 was a pivotal chapter in Porsche history, laying the foundation for the legendary 917 program and Porsche’s first overall victory at Le Mans.
