“When I paint the plants in my garden, I’m hoping that when people see it, they’re like, ‘What is this plant?’ and I get to tell them about it.” - Roan Victor, @roanvictor

Roan’s paintings of plants and wildlife are lush and luminescent, evidence of her careful attention to detail. Her garden—filled with native plants like manzanita and sticky monkey-flowers, as well as creatures like cats, chickens, and bees—offers no shortage of inspiration.

Roan’s newest solo exhibition, Review, opens at Obelisk Applied Arts this Saturday, with a series of works that reflect on the events, thoughts, and feelings of each month of the year—October 2025–September 2026.

“Soak in the Rain” gouache and watercolor pencil on wood panel, 12x12 inches

Last February was this young #matillijapoppy ‘s first in my garden. I planted it in the Fall the year before. It’ll be my 3rd attempt with this plant and so far it’s doing ok (yikes! Knock on wood). Hoping for lots of fried egg flowers in the spring next year.

I lived in Redwood City for a year when I was 24. That was the farthest away I lived from my parents. I called my mom almost everyday. And she would coax me into driving down to SJ to visit by telling me over the phone that she made Sinigang. It’s my favorite. I don’t know how to cook Filipino food so I usually only ever really have hers. Oh, and my sisters’, they know how to make it.

When my Lola was here visiting last year. She told me about how she used to make Sinigang before the powder mix. The flavor really comes from tamarind.

This painting here is an homage to my mom and her mom, my lola. by @roanvictor
