Honoring the legacy of Billy Arjan Singh, the legendary conservationist who transformed Dudhwa from a neglected forest into a thriving national park. His tireless efforts, including the groundbreaking rehabilitation of tigers like Tara, have left an indelible mark on wildlife preservation.

Despite controversy, his passion and dedication to nurturing India’s natural heritage continue to inspire. In the 1990s, some tigers in Dudhwa exhibited unique traits reminiscent of Siberian tigers. Singh’s forward-thinking approach led to DNA testing, revealing intriguing Bengal-Siberian genetic markers, showcasing his commitment to understanding and preserving wildlife.

A Hunt On The Go!

Dholes or Asiatic wild dogs are some of the coolest and the most efficient hunters! ⁣
⁣
Whats to appreciate in this rather gory-looking feat? ⁣
-Dholes are cursorial, they never slow down. I’ve seen deer just give up and sit after few minutes of high energy - high speed chasing. ⁣
-Dholes seem to have adapted to living in forests with larger carnivores and don’t have the luxury to eat in peace once the prey is completely taken down. This could be one of the reasons why they start eating as they kill! ⁣
-It’s some next level team work! ⁣

This particular spotted deer stag was dead 7 minutes AFTER this picture was taken. It’s not easy to watch but it’s nature! ⁣

A sub-adult bull strayed into the forest. We first noticed it and tried to push it out to the main road leading away from the jungle. We proceeded to the Pakki Patari (Tar road) between the main Sharda canal and the forest land – and stopped at a place where other vehicles were waiting for a Tigress to come out hearing a spotted deer call.

To our surprise, this sub-adult bull appeared on the same tar road. The only way to come out of the jungle was to walk 6 kms on the road as on one side there was a water canal and dense forest on the other. Apparently, with Tigers around, he was in a potential danger.

Our fear came true a few moments later – a giant male Tiger (S2) appeared on the road some 100 meters behind this bull. He started approaching the bull. Luckily the bull noticed the presence of the chasing Tiger, it jumped and started running towards the vehicles.

To the bull’s luck – there are a couple of things that worked in his favor – firstly, the male tiger made a kill a couple of days ago and was full – and was not hungry enough to chase the bull down; secondly, the noise from people around many vehicles also distracted the Tiger.

The Tiger and the bull exchanged the stare and the Tiger moved back into the forest.
