(1951 - 2026) Incredible, wonderful women, connected to our Mother Earth—the center, the beginning, and the end of everything. Isabel Pakarati Tepano, a representative of the Rapa Nui people, declared a Living Human Treasure by the State of Chile in 2017. Pakarati was the heir to an ancestral and family tradition of great significance to Rapa Nui culture: Kai Kai, a string figure game that narrates and preserves the historical memory of both the community and individual members.
In Kai Kai, oral tradition, singing, and bodily gestures intertwine, and she is recognized by her community as a bearer of this traditional knowledge.

José Mirson Agüero poses with his best sheep in Maillen Island, southern Chile.
This mist-covered island, steeped in legend, takes its name from the Huilliche word Maillen, which means “beautiful girl.” According to an old tale passed down through generations, the name recalls a young woman of great beauty who was abandoned there by pirates who used the island as a refuge during their voyages.
Maillen lies just 40 minutes by boat from the city of Puerto Montt - my hometown-, yet its landscape and traditions feel frozen in time.
The story goes like this: ever since I was a child, there was one place I always wanted to visit—Maillen Island, just a 40-minute boat ride from my hometown, Puerto Montt. I never got my parents’ permission to make that trip, and it remained one of those things I always dreamed of doing.
Many years later, I returned for that dream. I submitted a project proposal to a government cultural grant program to travel to Maillen Island with my father, Sergio Candia (who introduced me to photography), to carry out a documentary project in the way he taught me to photograph: using analog and medium format (120mm) film.
The series on Maillen Island and its people became a reunion with my roots—and with photography itself.

Life is full of magical moments; most of them are stored in our memory just for us. But there are a few that can be captured to share with others, like this one, which appeared in my taxi window where I was traveling. The umbrella’s man is one of my favorite photos, and even now, looking at it, it fills me with questions: what was he doing there? What was he thinking? What was he feeling? What was his life like?… there are so many questions, and none that I will ever be able to answer.
This man, like so many people I crossed paths with, made Shenyang, China unforgettable.

Yes, the founding figures. Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln are not only central figures in the founding and political history of the United States. They are also deeply embedded in its visual culture, serving as symbols of identity, commerce, and the guardianship of the marketplace. In other countries, it might be considered heresy… in the U.S., simply free market. Trader Joe’s Supermarket in Washington D.C.
