Twelve years ago, on August 1st, I met my soulmate at a gay bar in downtown Austin, not knowing I was going to get a two-for-one brown bag special. With Josh came a package deal—his sweet 2-year-old dog, Charlie.

And what a beautiful package it has been over the years.

I grew to completely fall in love with my baby doll. He was not only a part of our lives; he completely enhanced them. The joy he brought us every single day has been unmatched.

When I first met Charlie, he was shy but curious, having recently overcome an experience that had changed his personality. But Charlie’s strength and intelligence helped him reclaim his true self. He went from only playing and eating in the dark to never meeting a stranger and, once again, loving his time in the sunshine.

He was inquisitive and wanted to know everything—even the contents of a grocery bag. He was a man of many tricks, willing to learn or do just about anything for a treat. He also wasn’t one to hold back; he let you know when you were being too loud.

He taught us both so much about life and love: to take time to, quite literally, stop and smell the roses; to practice patience, kindness, and gentleness. He brought so much joy and light to all who knew him.
