We finally got the skylight installed and I feel it’s important to be completely honest about everyone’s contributions here…

Rob measured everything, checked it twice, worked out where it needed to go, and then casually cut a giant hole in the roof of our van like that’s a totally normal thing to do.

He then fitted the skylight, sealed it properly, made sure everything lined up, and generally used actual knowledge and practical skills to make it happen.

My role was equally important, obviously.

I stood nearby providing moral support and handing him tools when asked.

The only slight issue was that I have absolutely no idea what most tools are called, so my contribution mostly consisted of holding up random objects and asking, “This one?”

Which was usually met with a sigh and a “No.”

So while I love telling people that we installed a skylight, what really happened was Rob did all the work while I wandered around offering encouragement, asking unnecessary questions, and doing my best not to lose any of the tools I couldn’t name.

Somehow, despite my best efforts, the skylight is in, the van is still watertight, and we’re one step closer to getting this mountain bikers dream build finished. 🚐☀️😂

Massive credit to Rob for making the scary jobs look easy. I was just there for emotional support and quality control (by which I mean staring at it and saying, “Yep, that looks right”).

@rob.keen hit the jump, landed completely off the trail, and by the time I realised things had gone very wrong… I was already committed 😭🚴‍♀️💨

Next thing I know we’re both upside down in the bushes laughing our heads off while he’s shouting, “WHY WOULD YOU FOLLOW ME?!” 🤣🤣

We couldn’t wait any longer and got excited to put our new van to use 😅🚐🚴‍♀️⛰️

After getting the insulation to a stage we could come back to later, we moved on to building the bed above the garage area. We installed rivnuts into the van ribs so we could mount support battens and raise the bed high enough to fit the mountain bikes underneath.

For the bed frame, we used the IKEA extendable mid-beams along with the matching brackets (which IKEA weirdly doesn’t sell separately, so Amazon came to the rescue). We then laid wooden slats across the top and boxed the frame in so the mattress sits nice and flush.

We also decided to run the bed lengthways instead of the usual widthways setup - mainly because Rob is too tall to sleep sideways without turning into a pretzel 🥨 😂

Honestly, we’re just stoked to finally use the van. The build is far from finished, but we’re pressing pause for a little while to get out, ride trails, and enjoy exactly why we started this project in the first place 🚴‍♀️⛰️🐾💨

Our mountain biking van build is finally underway and we couldn’t be more excited. 🚐🚲🤍

The first pieces of the puzzle have arrived! 📦

We’ve started by adding the sound deadening and thermo-lining, creating the foundations for a van that will be quieter, warmer, and so much more comfortable for weekends spent chasing trails.

It’s amazing to see the transformation begin. This empty van will slowly become a cosy little home on wheels and the perfect base for mountain biking adventures. 🚵‍♀️✨

This is just the beginning, and we’re so excited to share every step of the journey with you. 💕
