They called it generic.

That’s the word Trump’s July proclamation uses for the canyons, cliffs, and mesas he cut from Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. Every quote in this video comes straight from that document. Video made possible with support from @patagonia

The proclamation says the rock art here is “not unique.” It says the ancient homes tucked into these cliffs are “not of particular historic or scientific interest.” Then, in the same document, grazing land gets called a “traditional cultural place.”

A petroglyph carved by someone’s ancestors is a “relatively common object.” A cow pasture is culture.

About 90 percent of both monuments is now gone. That’s nearly 3 million acres. On September 11, those lands opened to mining claims. The proclamation even lists the minerals it wants, from uranium to vanadium to zirconium.

The Hopi, Navajo, Ute Mountain Ute, Ute Indian Tribe, and Zuni worked for years to protect this place. Their Bears Ears Commission was “disbanded and terminated” in one sentence.

These lands are like a library of human history. This place is not generic. It never was.

We demand a full restoration of our national monuments. Share this to keep the momentum going taken in Bears Ears National Monument by @rob.lea

No, I didn’t lose a bet.

The Park City Rotary Club puts on the Miners Day parade every Labor Day, and this I got a spot in it. So I rode down Main Street in a Speedo and a double seven hat, waving from the back of a vintage Porsche.

It took 17 years to finish the Seven Summits and the Oceans Seven. Most of that time I was heads-down, moving to the next objective before the last one had landed. This was the closest thing to a victory lap I’ve had. It was one slow pass down Main Street, in front of the people who watched it happen in pieces. The early mornings on the pc hill, the pool laps at the MARC and Ecker, the neighbors who asked where I was headed next and then actually followed along. None of it happens without this town.

Celebrate the thing. Then let people laugh at you a little while you do it. Both matter.

Hat by @darrenalff, who is incredibly talented with paper hat construction. @pccindy and Allison for carrying the signs! @carolinegleich for filming.

Thank you to Jeff the ride and for being a part of the team, it was a significant upgrade on every other way I’ve covered this distance. And thanks to Park City Rotary for putting on the parade.

Trump stood in the Oval Office and said you can virtually not even walk at Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. Well, @rob.lea, @lennecefer, @littl.rain and I spent the day walking all over it.

We hiked through the places that got cut out of Utah’s National Monuments. He signed the order in July and shrank both monuments by more than 90 percent. On September 11, those lands officially opened to new mining claims. That’s about 2.9 million acres of our public land now up for grabs for mining and drilling.

No president has ever taken this much protected land away from the American people.

Some mining companies couldn’t even wait. They filed claims the day after he signed the order, almost two months early.

The part that hurts most is what happened to tribal leadership. The Hopi, Navajo, Zuni, Ute and Ute Mountain Ute tribes came together as the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition. For the first time, the government treated them as the original caretakers of this land and gave them a real say. This order wiped that away with one pen. These are their grandparents’ homes and burial grounds. It feels like the same old story of taking land from Native people, just told again in 2026.

I’m still hopeful though. Most people in Utah want these monuments put back, Republicans and Democrats alike. Tribes and conservation groups are fighting it in court. And every time we show up on this land, we prove it’s worth saving.

If you’ve ever hiked, hunted, camped or floated a river out here, this is your land too. Call your members of Congress and tell them to restore Bears Ears and Grand Staircase.

2 years ago today. The North Channel swim. 10 hours 36 minutes and 29 seconds. Just found this vid. Can’t see much in the first vid, but I think the 2 vid really shows how much the lions mane jellyfish crush you on this swim… and after.

Memories are a funny thing. I remember this clearly. But I also think I tried to forget it. You want to remember just that it was hard but that you got it done. It’s so much more than the highlight of the start and the finish.

Huge thanks to so many people that made this one possible. @infinitychanne3 & @jacqueline.mcclelland are as good as they come to coordinate logistics and keeping me safe. Top notch doesn’t do it justice! @asheccles made the trip from the UK. I can’t imagine it without her and she was the best crew ever… not to mention John and Nova! @tjtriage for documenting 📸🎥! And none of this is possible without @carolinegleich!! by @rob.lea

We still didn’t fully know what we were getting ourselves into with this channel crossing stuff. I had done the English Channel two years earlier. QWe had so much to learn about nutrition on these swims (shoutout to @sarahswims04 for helping me learn to do all liquid feeds!). It was an extremely challenging swim with a couple close calls where I got disoriented and almost swam into the boat. @carolinegleich can be loud and she had to let out one of the loudest screams of her life to get my attention to avoid disaster. I had to dig super deep to get this one done. Happy Catalina anniversary to the crew and me. Here’s to finding the thing that you dig deep for. Photos @alexaphoto by @rob.lea
