When I first moved to America, I was surprised that people didn’t stop to help if you were broken down on the side of the road. Back home in Ireland, someone would always stop—it was just what you did.

Then I found Topanga and Malibu, and I realized there are still places where people show up for each other. Over the last two weeks, I’ve seen so much kindness. Friends helped me with my horse after she was evacuated—making sure she had food, FaceTiming me, and spending time with her when I couldn’t be there. Others who had evacuated offered their homes, their cars, and anything else they could spare to help.

People reached out to let me know we could drain their pools if we needed water. Some helped me pull together a full list of swimming pools and water sources so I could pass it on to the fire department.

And then there’s Sam. He’s been incredible, giving so much love and support to the firefighters who’ve been away from their homes, families, and pets for so long. Just a few minutes with him, and so many of them have said it’s exactly what they needed. He’s brought comfort and joy in the toughest of times.

It’s moments like these that remind me how powerful kindness can be. When we show up for each other, we get through the impossible. Don’t forget to be kind—it can mean everything…. 🤍🫶🏻🤍 taken in Topanga Canyon, Topanga, California by @rob.roisin

It’s been a long two weeks, but I’d do it all again—though I really hope I never have to. For my community, this place I love, the people who feel like family, and the canyon I call home.

The loss is huge, and we have so much to rebuild. But through it all, we can’t forget how amazing this community is. The strength, the support, and the love we’ve shown each other through the hardest of times is what makes Topanga so special.

Firefighters have always had a special place in our hearts here, but after everything they’ve done for us—saving our homes, our pets, and our community—that love has only grown deeper. Huge shoutout to Topanga 69 and all the amazing men and women who came from across the country, Canada, and Mexico, putting their lives on the line for us.

Oh, and Sam? He’s officially the wellness dog of Station 69. taken in Topanga Canyon, Topanga, California by @rob.roisin

After almost two weeks of living in what felt like a war zone, with fires coming at us from all angles, Theo was evacuated to safety, and Sam and I stayed in the canyon, always ensuring we had multiple ways out.

My heart is heavy for the devastation and loss so many dear friends of mine have experienced. The love I have for this community, the nature, and the wildlife kept me fighting, even as we came so close to losing the whole canyon multiple times.

To the incredible firefighters—every single one of them—you are so amazing and so loved by this community, even before this fire. You came from all over and gave everything you had to save this canyon. Having witnessed firsthand how close we were to losing everything, it’s nothing short of a miracle.

Thank you to everyone who helped .. deep gratitude for everything you did & the people I’m forgetting right now apologies I have officially hit a wall 🤍🤍🤍 taken in Topanga Canyon, Topanga, California by @rob.roisin
