Okay. Now, summer is over.

Time seemingly flew by yet stood still. Tons of changes, but we’re only looking up from here.

Last weekend I got to leave the country for the second time in my life. This time, it was to Canada.

I had a great time racing @bigredgravelrun while up there. I didn’t plan on hiking my bike through muddy trails, rock gardens and flooded roads but I performed well other than that.

Beautiful sunsets, McDonald’s menus in French were among my favorite highlights.

Huge thanks to @lawrence_siu / @ror_nyc for allowing me another opportunity to see more and experience more 💜💙 taken in Québec, Canada by @rob0419

A year ago, I was in Iceland, racing The Rift. I had a crash and had to abandon the race only about 45 miles in. While my race was short lived, it left a mark on me (metaphorically and literally, I still have some scars from it).

I think about how I was afraid of racing but I signed up anyway. It makes me think about how far I’ve come since I started really riding bikes. I’ve been out there since 2013 or so but in 2016 I picked up my first road bike.

I couldn’t clip in. I rode with Nikes, running shirts and shorts. One could say it was the wrong outfit but you could argue it was the right one. It got me out there.

10 years later and I’m fully immersed in the sport. Almost 100,000 miles in. I’ve had highs and lows, great rides along with really bad rides. Tons of crashes, sweat stains, sores, everything. I learned to embrace the bad with the good.

I’ve had times when I didn’t think I’d ride again, but I’m still here. With just as much gratitude as ever.

🎉 SHOKZ GIVEAWAY 🎉

If you’ve ever run or ridden in NYC, you know how important it is to stay aware of what’s happening around you.

Between traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, construction, and everything else the city throws at us, being able to hear your surroundings isn’t optional—it’s part of staying safe.

That’s why I wear my Shokz on every ride and run.

The open-ear design lets me enjoy my music, podcasts, and training motivation while still hearing approaching cars, other cyclists, runners, and the sounds of the city around me. They’ve become one of the few pieces of gear that I use nearly every single day.

As a Shokz Ambassador, I’m excited to give one member of our running and cycling community a pair of OpenRun Pro 2, so they can experience them too!

To enter:
✅ Follow me
✅ Like and share this post
✅ Comment with your favorite artist you workout to
✅ Tag a friend
✅Follow me on Strava (https://www.strava.com/athletes/rob0419)

Winner will be announced next Friday (June 12th).

Good luck, and I’d love to hear what you’re listening to! 🚴🏃 @shokzusa

Yesterday was the first time I rode up to Bear Mountain since last September. If you asked me a couple months ago, I wasn’t sure if I would come back up there.

I went out yesterday and enjoyed every minute of my ride. The views, the smells, the sounds. I even enjoyed the bugs flying into my face as well as the terrible bumpy roads in Haverstraw.

My body even felt great, I felt energetic, strong and I rode consistently, with my slow and heavy gravel bike. Hit some Best Efforts on Strava and also got some PRs. I even stopped and talked to a guy in his 60’s, he talked about his adventures, riding across the country. I told him I admired that and how I wish to ride like that someday.

It was just a great day. There will be more of them. taken in Bear Mountain State Park by @rob0419

This latest chapter has been the toughest. The lowest of the lows. Long and dark cold winter days with very brief moments of sunshine and warmth.

These days feel like a form of solitary confinement, with tons of time spent on reflection. Through reflection, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to have special people in my life.

I’m also always reminded of the good times ahead. While the future is never promised, I know it’ll be brighter.

❤️

Last Saturday I spent a few hours reintroducing myself to the NYC running scene, in the most painful way possible. Again.

Running OSR30 for the 4th time was something I only briefly considered, after being a bike escort for the last 2 years. That is, until Ryo offered to be my bike escort. It’s been a dark winter for me and signing up for the race gave me a reason to leave the house and run.

I signed up February 1st (the last day) and very quickly had to become a runner again. It had been years since I ran this often but I needed this race, I needed this challenge. Rough winter runs rebuilt the grittiness that I lost. 10 days out, I started experiencing hip pain and I seriously considered dropping out of the race. I hit pause on any running and saved it all for race day.

The day of, I took my time, ran consistently while never stopping or walking. All while the pain came back. I let my heart and spirit get me to the finish line. It wasn’t my fastest but it wasn’t my slowest. I was happy to finish. As I finished I fell into the arms of my friends as I hugged them. I was reminded of how much love and support there is out there.

A huge thank you to Joe at Orchard Street Runners for not only continuing to host this amazing race, but allowing for me to be a part of it. 6 years and counting, it’s my favorite time of the year.

Thanks to Ryo for supporting me and being patient out in those streets as well as Old Man Run Club for being such a pillar of the community.

Thanks to coach Viv for coming up with my short but dense training program, as well as inspiring me.

Love y’all.

I haven’t been having the best time.

Spending time with good friends, being present, learning (how to ski and ice skate, obviously), tons of reflection, all while moving only forward.

Just a random collection of some of my favorite moments over the last couple months.

From attending cross camp with @ror_nyc to attending baseball games with friends, finally seeing the Yankees beat the Red Sox. I got to meet one of the best cyclists of all time @mathieuvanderpoel , do some whale watching in NYC (a dream experience) and to race a last minute half marathon with zero training. Thanks always to @orchardstreetrunners for putting on a great race, as usual. I even got to see Kipchoge for the last time, probably.

Times have been weird but I’m making the best of my time, riding my bike, running or hanging with good friends. Life ain’t too bad this way.

In Iceland, I was told this was after I had to abandon my bike in the wilderness, after my crash. It’s a saying there that means, “It’ll work out” or “It’ll be okay”. I was helped by three different groups of people and my bike was finally recovered about 12 hours later. Coming from NY, it felt really good to be reminded that there’s good out there.

Lately though, I’ve had some really stressful times and it hasn’t been great for me, generally. I’m reminding myself that it’ll work out. It will be okay, since I can’t pronounce the Icelandic saying.

I’ve been pretty much as social as I’ve ever been, hanging with friends that I love, running with people, showing up to events. Though short, all of these interactions remind me that I’m loved and there’s people in my corner. I’m exhausted but my heart feels full.

Hard to put this into words but I’ve been so lucky to be part of @ror_nyc .

The support I’ve had from the team has moved me. Back in January, we had a team meeting, discussing the race calendar. @chadshack suggested I join the team in Iceland. I was hesitant but intrigued. I was comforted by the fact that I wouldn’t be alone. They organized everything, making it so easy, allowing me to focus on the race. These guys took care of me.

From custom kit designed by @chiapet___ to @ianadelman driving us across the country. After I crashed during the race, I doubted myself so much, considered taking a long break from cycling. I talked to Chad and Lawrence and they helped me and my confidence about it. I had endless advice from Jeremy as well. All people I respect so much.

My experience with this team has been something I’ll never take for granted. I truly feel part of something. I feel accepted and empowered, knowing people have my back. This is community, this is another reason why I ride.

Thanks so much to @aaconnsworld for being a great dude and taking so many good photos. Making me look pro.

My second trip to Boulder was a little better. I had perfect weather for almost the entire trip, allowing me to enjoy some real cycling.

Saying “real cycling” almost feels like an understatement though. I only did a handful of short rides but they were all the best rides I’ve ever done. I had my top 3 biggest climbs, ever. From climbing for 10 miles (then descending 17!) to some steep dirt roads that I crawled up. I suffered up each climb, as I wasn’t acclimated, but I thoroughly enjoyed the views at the top. I got to meet a bunch of great people along the way.

I can’t wait to come back. I’ll have to get into shape before then. My rides back home in NY will barely scratch that climbing itch I have now.
