I'm a ranger!

5 months of work and study in Fort William is over.

From removing invasive species in driving hail and sleet, through learning how to safely operate a chainsaw, to building paths, and monitoring habitats. And everything in between.

All in the company of the funniest and occasionally unruly cohort of trainee rangers you could hope for.

A few days rest now, before starting a new job as a ranger in Fife next week. But more on that later.

Back from a brilliant @edinburghyoungwalkers @ramblersscotland volunteering weekend on the beautiful Isle of Tiree. Bikes were a great way to get around the island, minimise our environmental impact, and contribute to the local economy by hiring with @tireefitnesswill, though the 40mph headwinds getting back to our campsite was a challenge! 🌬🚴‍♀️ Working with Hayley, the Tiree Ranger, was an absolute pleasure as we helped clean Tiree's phenomenal beaches ⛱️. It was also great fun teaming up with Sally Morris from @buglife_ict to survey for rare Short-necked oil beetles (SNOBs for short 😉) at Vaul beach. Sadly, the trip was cut short by a day because of the weather causing problems for the ferry, but we're already planning to go back ASAP! It was my first time seeing the aurora, just a few minutes from my home. I was always unsure if I'd know it when I saw it. It was, as they said, never as vivid or colourful as in the pictures. In fact, I could see almost no colour. I think, for a long time, the vast horizontal streak across the sky I mistook for cloud. But those vertical dancers, I saw them. And I knew instantly what I saw. Something deep inside me leapt up and danced with them. Something more intense, more primal, than any photo could ever convey.

When the snow falls and then the sun shines, Scotland's mountains glow.

Stob Binnein is a very elegant peak, but things weren't looking good for being able to see it on top of Ben More, shrouded in cloud. But as we began to descend towards the bealach, the sun came out, and I couldn't help but smile. 😁

The last rays of the setting sun glaze the slopes of Beinn Airigh Char and the still waters of Loch Maree.

Some of my favourite moments when at @beinneighennr were sitting in the boggy meadows behind the field office, slowly regenerating with native trees, at sunset. I'd listen to the birds singing their goodnights, and watch as the sun silently painted its way across the the hills on the banks of the loch in gradually darkening shades of orange. Pure peace.

Back from an awesome long weekend leading a group of volunteers from @edinburghyoungwalkers to the Isle of Rum, working with rangers from @rum_national_nature_reserve @naturescot to improve pathways, clean beaches, and protect the wildlife on the island.

We cut kilometres of head-high bracken and scrub to clear an old path to the abandoned settlement at Port na Caranean, where an otter joined us for lunch. Hopefully, more visitors can now make the trip to this beautiful, secluded spot.

We hiked across the interior, seeing both native species of eagles, and cleaned the beach at Harris, stopping an array of items from shotgun cartridges to fishing gear posing a threat to wildlife.

We hiked up below the Rum Cuillin to collect rat traps that protect the world's largest colony of Manx Shearwaters, and a few of us stayed up there at night for the magic of hearing tens of thousands of these plucky little seabirds returning to their nests, their wingbeats and troll-like calls just above our heads. We also got to do a little bat surveying in Kinloch Castle!

We had some lovely hikes and, most importantly, hopefully left the island in better shape than we found it.

Thanks to the folks at the amazing @rumbunkhouse and @isleofrumcommunityshop for their incredible hospitality (and vital supply of ice cream!) during our stay!

Ospreys must be one of the most striking birds in the UK. Streaks of white and brown, piercing eye and razor beak. Wild punk crest. To see them so close as at @scottishwildlifetrust Loch of the Lowes, raising their young fearlessly, hoisting themselves in the air to pinpoint their fish prey, is just a marvel. Just over half a century ago, these birds were functionally extinct in the UK, but, thanks to special havens like this beautiful loch near Dunkeld, are now thriving. A wonderful conservation good news story. I'm pretty proud of the clarity of this phone scope shot, too! 😉

Reflecting on what was one of the best months of my life, this April just gone, volunteering at the @beinneighennr with @naturescot. The place, the quiet. The wonderful people like @doug_beinn_eighe and @katmack94, to name only a few, who took me into the tight-knit family there. The dogs! The mud... and not to mention the Black-throated Divers, though they may need a whole post to themselves! I can't wait to be back there. Happiness is being outside.

The last thing I expected to be doing the day after surmounting the formidable challenge of Liathach was attempting a full East-West traverse of the rocky, sprawling ridge of its (very different) neighbour, Beinn Eighe. But there's nothing that revives tired legs quite like the good company of great friends @fi.squared @the_curious_camel @__cloudfactory__, except maybe a dook in the very fresh 🥶 waters of Lochan Coire Mhic Fhearchair! Another day not quickly forgotten...
