Do you have Time-Space Synesthesia? It’s possible you do and didn’t realize it. I have always seen time units in my mind’s eye, but never thought to mention it until recently as I probably assumed that everyone else sees time this way as well. For me, there is only one possible way to visualize days of the week, as an oval loop. Months of the year have a very specific 3D pattern that rotates depending what month it is. Years and decades are a ribbon of time that moves upwards past my left shoulder. Unlike some others I have spoken to, in my visualizations there are no colors, just shapes. It’s a fascinating topic, and although relatively little research has targeted time–space synesthesia, there is enough out there to reveal some bizarre commonalities between random people. The Synesthesia Tree webpage is a good starting point. Link in bio!I have also tried to capture this idea musically on my recent percussion album. The title track includes Lady Cove Choir, and the words are mainly about Time-Space Synesthesia, along with a general fascination with our place in time together. by @rob_power_percussion

This past Thursday we had a fantastic album release concert at the D.F. Cook Hall!I am forever in debt to Bill Brennan, Erin Donovan, Étienne Gendron, Phil Yetman, Mason Power, Jenna Grant, Amy Parsons, and Bruce Ramsay. These are very busy people who made the time to put this music together with me. It was a lot of challenging work, but a whole lot of fun too. They are really good! And to be joined at the end by Lady Cove Choir, directed by the incredible Leslee Heys - words cannot express how lucky I feel. The singers in that choir have had a huge impact on my life for the last twenty years. That night we missed Kellie Walsh who is still on a weather hold in Labrador (seven days running), but Leslee Heys saved the day and was absolutely fantastic. What a musician! There are many highlights for me, but listening to Erin Donovan perform the solo piece Mahone Bay - well that was something truly special. No one sounds like Erin, and I’m so thankful to have her artistry in my life.Whenever I write a percussion piece and it seems to work, it is usually because Bill Brennan is at the core of the music with me. This concert was another example of how Bill elevates the people around him. I just can’t imagine anyone else playing these parts like Bill. We’ve been making music together for thirty years, and it’s been the best education any musician could have.A special thank you to the Music at Memorial Series for presenting this show, and especially to Mark Micklethwaite for all his help at the School of Music. The album and the concert would not have happened without the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, ArtsNL, MusicNL, and Memorial University. If you were at the concert and wanted a physical CD - I apologize that I simply didn’t bring enough that night and we ran out. Send me a note and I will get one to you!Links in bio by @rob_power_percussion

A Time and a Place is out today, and I am really excited to finally share it! Many special people have come together to make this project happen. It would not exist without the talent and care of Bill Brennan, Erin Donovan, Étienne Gendron, Jenna Grant, Amy Parsons, Mason Power, Phil Yetman, and Lady Cove Choir under the direction of Kellie Walsh. John D.S. Adams captured these performances using immersive audio techniques, and has realized them in Dolby Atmos 3D audio. His ear, craft, and imagination are all over this album. This project also exists because of the crucial funding support of MusicNL, ArtsNL, the Canada Council for the Arts, and Memorial University. The album features original percussion works, including one track with choir. Each piece is dedicated to someone who has shaped my musical and personal life: Paul Bendzsa, Erin Donovan, Kjellrun Hestekin, John Wyre, and Kellie Walsh and Lady Cove Choir.Listen at your favourite service or click link in bio. Liner notes at robpower.caFor the full Dolby Atmos 3D experience, use headphones and stream on Apple Music, Tidal, or Amazon Music. Physical CDs are available at Fred’s Records in St. John’s.If you are in St. John’s, come hear it live: February 12 Album Release Show.
