A few things I learned playing links golf in Ireland 🇮🇪⛳️

1. The wind changes everything.
Don’t be afraid to club up or down 2–3 clubs. A normal yardage can play completely differently depending on the direction and strength of the wind.

2. Ball striking matters even more.
Spinny or uncommitted shots get exposed quickly in the wind. Learning to flight the ball down and make solid contact is huge. Sometimes the best shot is simply keeping it low and letting it pierce through the wind.

3. You don’t always need driver.
I played three rounds punching 5-iron off a lot of tees because I wasn’t comfortable with my driver. It taught me a pretty simple lesson: keep the ball in play and, more often than not, bogey becomes your worst-case scenario.

4. Account for the rollout.
Links golf makes you think about where the ball needs to land, not just the number to the pin. Firm fairways, slopes and wind can send the ball a long way after it hits the ground.

5. Walking is part of the experience.
Pretty much everyone walks, which is a big change from what I’m used to playing back in the States. It honestly adds to the whole links-golf experience.

6. Don’t expect the cart girl. 😂
No drinks coming around every few holes. Save the Guinness for the clubhouse after the round.

7. Stableford is everywhere.
Something else I wasn’t used to coming from the States. Stableford is a much more common way to play, and it makes a lot of sense on difficult links courses where one bad hole doesn’t have to ruin your entire round.

Links golf forces you to play a different game — control your flight, use the ground, embrace the wind and find a way to keep the ball in play. 🇮🇪
