’79-'81 Drop G 20/12/14 with a 1973 (I think) 16" floor tom, refinished for the second and final time.

This is the color I wanted to do the first time I refinished but thought it would be more complicated to get it right. So I opted to do a simple natural finish but ultimately wasn't happy with the color. This is my all time favorite Gretsch finish. I was trying to go for the brown/burgundy walnut finish Gretsch did in the 70s that can look either more red or more brown depending on the lighting and angle.

I think I nailed it. I didn't bother to strip the previous finish because I thought the previous color could have some influence on the highlights of the new color. I use gel stain so I just sanded back the polyurethane slightly and put the new finish over it. Two coats of Old Masters American Walnut gel stain then two of OM Rich Mahogany gel stain, and four coats of General Finishes satin gel polyurethane. For some reason though the hoops weren't taking the burgundy color the same so I stopped and left them a contrasting walnut color.

I've been working on this since March. It started out as refinishing a kit I had but that didn't work out so I started over.

I had no clue what I was doing and started over more than I care to think about lol

I made the wood grommets with a drill press and power drill. I've never made anything from scratch with wood so that was an interesting process.

I used Gibraltar swivel nuts for the tension rod receivers. On the bass drum they're pressed into the rod guide on the claw. The only single tension tension rods long enough for the floor tom & bass drum are vintage t-rods. The bass drum rods are WFL rods I had, but I didn't want to use t-rods on the floor tom. So I had the idea of cutting and threading two tension rods and joining them with M5 coupling nuts. I used red loctite to keep them from backing out.

I used Canopus bolt tight washers and heat shrink to try and stop any rattling that these kinds of kits are known for.

The bass drum head is one my dad painted for me years ago. The floor tom brackets & legs are from @inde_drum and the bass drum spurs are DW clamp-on.

This has taken over my life for 6 months (yay ADD!) and I never thought I'd get it done. Now that it's done it'll be a long time before I ever do a kit again, if ever lol

Just got these amazing wood hoops from @stellardrums for my Yamaha kit. I didn't have long enough tension rods for the floor tom so I had to order those but I couldn't wait to post how they look with the kit.

This is the 3rd set of hoops Jody has made me for me (the first in this style) and as always the work and his customer service is top notch.

I've always had a soft spot for Yamaha since I was a kid, so I ended up piecing this together.

8x12, 9x13, 16x16 Recording Customs from 1981 (the year I was born ❤️)

14x22 9000 from the late 70's

The finish & lugs might not match but they sound great and I love the visual contrast especially since the bass drum hoops match the toms.
