Exhibition design and scenography for the exhibition »Archivsequenzen.

[EN] The fascination with the archive as a repository of memory and a resource for the future has, in recent years, led to the scholarly and artistic investigation of numerous archives. The Dommuseum is contributing to this development by turning its attention, for the first time, to its analogue photographic archive, originally established for documentation purposes and until now largely overlooked. British anthropologist Elizabeth Edwards coined the term »non-collection« to describe photographic bodies of work that document and present art collections. They are not merely archival instruments, but also possess an aesthetic value of their own and influence how we perceive museum collections. The exhibition »Archivsequenzen« brings this extraordinary collection into the public eye, addressing the archive’s historical role and future place in the museum system.

Exhibition design and scenography for the exhibition »Archivsequenzen.

[EN] With the exhibition »Archivsequenzen« the Dommuseum Hildesheim presents photographs from its extensive, previously unexplored photographic archive for the first time. The archive documents the cathedral complex, the cathedral excavations, the cathedral treasury, the churches of Hildesheim, and their surroundings. The collection includes glass plate negatives, negatives, film strips, slides, and photographic prints. A selection highlights the photographs’ high aesthetic and technical quality, while revealing the reception and staging strategies of earlier generations of researchers and photographers. At the same time, they offer unique insights into the many transformations of the cathedral, the Dommuseum, and the cathedral treasury. Rather than being presented primarily as images, the photographs are treated as objects with biographies and value of their own.

Exhibition design and scenography for the special exhibition »Jupp Darchinger – Das Auge der Republik« for the @lvrlandesmuseum Bonn.

[EN] The exhibition was realized in cooperation with the Archive of Social Democracy of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation (@fesonline) and was on display from June to September at the @lvrlandesmuseum Bonn. It honors the work of renowned photojournalist Jupp Darchinger, who, as a chronicler of the Bonn Republic, documented the developments of the Federal Republic of Germany photographically from the 1950s until reunification.
The visual identity of the exhibition is as strong, bold and self-assured as Darchinger himself, yet it knows when to take a back seat visually in order to give Darchinger’s contrasting works centre stage.
