Darnable Quilt # 1

This piece sits at the intersection of my work as a mender and quiltmaker. A tactile, interactive sample that can be undone and redone meditatively.

Antique and aging quilts often need repair through degradation of materials or accidental damage. I thought the idea of intentionally adding a hole to a new textile references the planned obsolescence and disposability we have been conditioned to accept in modern textiles.

On display at Cliff Edge, Textile Art on the brink
2-14 October 2026 @cromerartspace

From the glimpses I have seen so far, this exhibition looks absolutely fantastic! I’m so honoured to be included and I can’t wait to visit! by @roberta.cummings

Delighted to be returning to @gressenhall_fw this Sunday 4th October for Apple Day! 🍎 🍏

I’m bring some of my hand crank sewing machines and craft supplies where you can stop and sew with me. I’ll be hand quilting the quilt started here in 2024 on the Textile Takeover day, and continued at Apple Day 2025. Quilting helpers are most welcome to stop by!

I’ll also be selling patchwork bags, zip pouches, mini quilts, potholders, prints and zines, all made by me. And I just finished making a batch of topical plush apple brooches that I feel very maternal towards.

Hope to see you there! Are you planning to attend? RSVP in the comments ;)

Photos from some previous mending workshops to give a taste of what to expect at my two hour darning workshop coming up at @cromerartspace on Saturday 3rd October! This (now sold out) event is in conjunction with the forthcoming exhibition, Cliff edge: Textile Art on the Brink, which opens on Friday 2nd October.

We will be working on plain weave darning and loom darning and more, if time allows. Participants are encouraged to bring their own holey garments to work on, but if not I will provide a sacrificial jumper!

Cromer Artspace is a fantastic gallery in a stunning location and I’m very excited to be involved in their programme! 🌊 🪡 🧦 by @roberta.cummings

Every time I finish a bag or quilt project, I make a mini quilt with the leftover fabric. It is very freeing, helps manage scraps as I don’t have an acceptable storage system for them and avoids decision fatigue, they almost make themselves! Highly recommend if you’re in a creative rut atm

Just to finish them with binding and then they’re all coming with me to Apple Day on Sunday 4th October at @gressenhall_fw more on that to follow next week 😚🍏

Throwback to Summer 2025 and this quilt commission. The customer wanted a king size quilt made to celebrate her sister and brother in law’s first wedding anniversary, made using the leftover green linen from the bridesmaid’s dresses. This was mid June (the week after I was made redundant) and the deadline was early to mid August 😳😅coolcoolcool

By the time we had settled on a design (I’ll share the alternative designs to my stories) a few weeks had passed.

Thinking back I didn’t know how much of the green linen was even available, it was sent as a bolt and I didn’t actually measure it before I started. So when I say I did not plan out the meterage requirements and literally hoped for the best! I sourced a complimentary milk linen from M&M, ordering 4m thinking that would be ample with enough to make a shirt with the leftovers WRONG I had to order an additional six metres 😂 I used the very last square of the green on the back

The quilt top assembled quite quickly I think it took a week. One thing i will note is that for piecing shifty linen cloth like this, I will always use a seam allowance of 3/8”. It being slightly bigger than the typical quarter inch just makes it easier to handle and to get sharp points.

The quilt then had to be hand quilted due to its size but fresh off the back of completing the Moon Of Bethlehem Community Quilt For Gaza, I felt it was an achievable task. We agreed upon a quilted star shape in each white square, that echoed the shape of the green star. Mind you I was just about to go on holiday to Antrim and had to take it with me!

The quilt was delivered the third week of August and the recipients loved it

Thanks to my client for trusting me with such a special project. The timeline was little hairy at times but honestly the project helped me profoundly with the transition to self-employment. I still cannot get over the fortuitous timing of it.

If you’re reading this and think, hang on I would like a custom heirloom quilt made to my specifications, please get in touch!

Lastly, my gratitude to @tuckitin_quilts for the recommendation and for making for this commission possible

Sock Girl Summer is OVER 🍂
I kept a bag of holey ankle socks in the car and this is what I managed to get patched over the last few months

Repair details: cut patch from another donor sock or similar jersey fabric, leaving edges raw. Apply the patch using a whip stitch and regular sewing thread, worked in a spiral from outer edge to centre. Stitch to either inside or outside as your heart desires

Together we raised £800 for folks with ME/CFS and ME charities, thank you for making that possible 💙

ME/CFS, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, is a debilitating, multi-system neuro immune disease that affects every system in the body. It is a deeply misunderstood, stigmatised and underfunded condition and there is currently no cure.

People with Long Covid symptoms often meet the diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS, so the numbers of people with this disease have skyrocketed in the last six years

How to enter💙
Make a direct donation of £5 of more to one of the mutual aid funds for individuals with ME listed in my story highlight “ME/CFS quilt raffle donation links” OR make a donation to one of the three charities listed below, also linked in my story highlight. Screenshot the donation receipt and email it to my dedicated quilt raffle email: moonofbethlehemquilt@gmail.com
£5 is one entry to the raffle, £10 is two entries etc

If you have a different fund you’d like to support, please dm me and I will add it to the highlight.

If you would prefer to donate to a larger organisation, these three are highly recommended 💙
