My first en plein air painting. Couldn’t have picked a nicer day. It was rushed, but mixing the palette to the light was a blast. Grabbing the clouds before they cleared, noticing the green glow at the base of the pilings, the sudden pinkness of the sand north of the pier, was 100% exciting. Would love to get a group of folks out there. I have much to learn and am so inspired by other artists.

I'm excited to be teaching Oil Painting Still Life @theartistoutpost starting October 30! Scroll through these stages of our first project, a 45min still life in oil. I’ll be gushing about color mixing and the human eye’s ability to see nuanced color. Fall in love with this medium and find beauty in small, every day things.

What a joy to start and end this painting in an afternoon. Oils stay wet so multiple day paintings are the norm, but to extend the creative window while painting outdoors was so fun, even if dusk came early and the painting is a little unfinished.

This compilation shows part of my process. Finbar in Robb Field is hand drawn (the proof is in his ear-lusive ear) and painted in oil on 11x14. I start with a yellow ochre wash, outline in stub brush and add dark tones, then work dark to light. (Do you see Mr. Cuteins?)

I’m hungry for more portraits. I LOVED painting @embrehm ‘s portrait, but yearned to paint their (beautiful) faces larger.

Another amazing day at art camp!!!!! 🐝 Thank you artists! To accommodate a wide range of ages we set up stations today where campers could pull paint across shapes of paper as well as create wax resist with crayons, painted with balloons, and more. The best art might be summer camp art! I am living my best life as an art teacher at summer camp this week @theartistoutpost.

Don’t you agree, a good book is one that starts with a map!?

This map project is SO fun and clever. A great way to create a convincing shoreline is to first drop down confetti and trace the shoreline that appears as well as bodies of water. Campers had a blast building their worlds! taken in The Artist Outpost by @roberta.sutton

Thank you @oceanbeachelementary for inviting me and @theartistoutpost to host a super fun watercolor workshop at OBE’s Family Art Night! What a community. Everyone, kiddos and parents alike, are always game to jump in and try something new. Thrilled as an OBE mom and art teacher.

Try this at home! Put down puddles of watercolor, dry, then move around hole-punch eyes until a creature emerges.

Mr. Cuteins and I highly recommend hanging art where your cat hangs out, so you have a nice photo backdrop for “picture day.” Also, now that our beloved OB pier (painted here) is being demoed, maybe we should have a photo backdrop near its site for people to take photos of themselves, missing the pier😢 Engineers should’ve listened to the surfers! taken in Ocean Beach Pier, San Diego by @roberta.sutton

Just learned 2 paintings were chosen to be printed on street banners in Ocean Beach! What a great program from the Main Street Association, picking artist work to brighten street lights! Yesterday, I had a blast teaching our first festive, crafting hat trick @theartistoutpost! Student artists and I simultaneously worked on linocuts, candle making, and wreath making, enjoying the company and cross-inspiration.

We had the holiday jams playing, but “She’s Crafty” was stuck in my head the whole time.
