We recently hosted 'The Window Is Open: Sound on Art' at @by_maslows Kensington - a one of a kind event.

Across the evening, guests moved between turntables, paintings and conversation, experiencing mixed-media works by @robertavolpeart Volpe alongside original compositions by @sound_hybrid_artist (S.H.A.).

Two years in Dubai… and it feels like only yesterday that I arrived.

I still miss London, but Dubai’s energy is definitely growing on me. There are so many opportunities here, and I feel more and more inspired to explore new paths and take on new challenges.

I’m truly grateful to this city and for all the opportunities it has given me so far.

I’m starting my third year in Dubai with some big goals ahead, including my first art fair in the Middle East: World Art Dubai this November!

I can’t wait for what’s next.

When painting meets sound.

My collaboration with Sound Hybrid Artist started three paintings back, with The Dreamer. It kept going through Bucephalus, then The Ghost Light.

I work in image, texture, material, and light. Sacha works in sound, building a soundscape from scratch for each painting. Put the two together, and you get art you can look at and listen to at once.

Every collaboration ships as three things: the original painting, its soundtrack, and a limited-edition transparent vinyl.
Three paintings in, and this has outgrown what I thought it would be.
There’s a new one coming.

What if a painting had a voice? We are presenting a one-of-a-kind audio-visual art project «Sound on Art»

Three works by Roberta Volpe. Three transparent vinyl records each carrying a bespoke soundtrack by S.H.A., each written in response to the canvas. Guests experience them with headphones on, one painting at a time.

Every score plays in full, for this event only. No online release, no second listening. At the end of the night the three works go to a quiet auction, and each unique record leaves with its painting.

17 September, 6–8:30pm · Maslow’s Kensington · drinks included · tickets in bio.

I am so excited to be going back to work in theatre!

I have always loved a definition of theatre I once came across: theatre is like a ghost, it disappears the moment the performance ends.

What remains are the documents, props, costumes and sets, but the performance itself no longer exists. It belongs entirely to that moment in time.

Nothing is quite as connected to the present as theatre, and being part of creating that fleeting moment is something truly magical.

Making of: an immersive mural in a private home in London.

Over two summers, I had the privilege of creating this immersive mural in a beautiful bedroom in London.

The original idea came from the homeowners, Charlotte and Adrian. Inspired by the paintings of J.M.W. Turner and developed from a colourful mind map, the mural took one week to paint last summer, followed by threee more days this summer to add the final details and finishing touches.

The choice of colours was a real success, and it was wonderful to discover that they even inspired the colours of their wedding cake.

Thank you, Charlotte and Adrian, for trusting me with your beautiful home and for allowing me to be part of such a special chapter in your lives.

I wish you both a lifetime of happiness in your gorgeous home.

Limited Edition Print – National Theatre (A2)

I lived in London for 11 years, and the National Theatre always felt like my second home. I spent countless hours in its beautiful lobby studying, reading and, of course, watching some of the most inspiring productions on its stage.

2020 was an incredibly difficult year for the theatre industry, and seeing theatres close their doors broke my heart. During that time, I began creating a series of digital drawings celebrating London’s Theatreland—a project that I continue to work on today. It has brought me so much joy, not only by capturing these iconic theatres but also by discovering and appreciating their extraordinary architecture.

The National Theatre is one of my favourites.

Making of Emirates for Love

This is the making of Emirates for Love, a monumental mural measuring 7.50 × 2.50 metres, inspired by Guernica.

Ten-year-old students at an international school in Dubai reimagined one of the world’s most famous anti-war paintings as a manifesto of peace, love, and human connection.

For one week, the students studied Guernica and sketched ideas inspired by Picasso’s style. They then spent four days drawing and painting their own vision.

This project was supported by two remarkable figures from the art world: Dr Najat Makki, one of the UAE’s most celebrated artists, and James Payne, the British art historian and creator of Great Art Explained, whose brilliant three-minute video made this profound masterpiece accessible to our ten-year-old students.

I truly believe this is a powerful message coming from children in an international school in the UAE.

As Picasso once said:
“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”

I believe he would have been incredibly proud of these amazing young artists.

Today we completed the mural inspired by Guernica, renamed Emirates for Love.

Acrylic on wooden panels
7.50 m × 2.50 m

This mural is filled with symbols representing the many cultures that make up our community in Dubai.

The students carefully chose meaningful images inspired by different cultures:

• United Kingdom – the poppy, representing Remembrance
• India – the lotus flower
• Ukraine – the sunflower
• Türkiye – the grey wolf from Turkish culture
• Lebanon – the boat, representing Lebanon’s maritime heritage
• United Arab Emirates – a flower with a candle in the colours of the UAE flag
• Saudi Arabia – the camel

Each symbol tells a story and reminds us that, despite our different backgrounds, we can live together with respect, understanding, and peace.
