A Deck for Their Next Chapter 🌿

This retired teacher couple chose Nextwood PVC decking.

Less time staining and sanding
More time enjoying their backyard

Nextwood project:
Walnut x Driftwood.

Walnut brings the warmth.
Driftwood gives it definition. šŸ¤ŽšŸ©¶

We used Walnut as the main colour for this deck, with Driftwood around the edges and stairs.

The contrast makes each step stand out and ties in beautifully with the home’s grey brick and black railing.

Would you choose two colours for your deck, or keep it all Walnut?

Is PVC deck Always Cooler Than Composite deck?

I put the comparison chart above, so you can judge the numbers yourself.

A few things stood out to me:

Trex and AZEK were closer than I expected.
With similar colours, the temperature difference was usually only around 2 to 5°C.
The newer Trex Transcend samples were noticeably cooler.
Rainier stood out the most, finishing about 11°C cooler than some of the hotter samples.
Colour was not always predictable.
Some deep brown boards actually ran hotter than darker, chocolate toned colours.

That surprised me.

Surface technology matters, whether it is PVC or composite.
The coating, pigment and heat reflecting design can make a big difference.

And overall, the light grey boards were the coolest.

So the simple answer is:

PVC is not automatically cooler than composite.

Brand, collection, colour and surface technology matter just as much.

And if heat is your biggest concern, light grey are still the safest place to start. by @robertbeyonetheboard

Back in 2020, I built my own deck.

At the time, I compared Cedar with pressure treated lumber and chose Cedar.

The reason was simple. My kids were still young, always barefoot in the backyard, sitting and playing on the deck. When I saw the words ā€œpressure treatedā€ and ā€œchemical treatment,ā€ I felt more comfortable paying a little extra for Cedar.

And for the first year, I thought I had made the perfect choice.

Warm colour. Natural wood grain. Kids playing outside. Beer in hand.

Exactly what I imagined a backyard should feel like.

Then a few years passed.

The Cedar started fading.

Nothing wrong with it. That is what wood does.

The problem was that I wanted it to keep looking like year one.

So every 2 years came the same routine.

Move the furniture.
Wash the deck.
Wait for it to dry.
Stain it again.

Some weekends I planned to relax on the deck.

Instead, I ended up working for the deck.

That is when I learned something.

The real cost of a wood deck is not just the price of the boards.

It is also your time.

If I were choosing again today, I would ask myself three things:

Do I really love natural wood?
Can I accept it turning grey?
Am I willing to maintain it every few years?

Pressure treated lumber is still a great budget option.

Cedar is beautiful if you love real wood and do not mind the maintenance.

And today, of course, there are also PVC and composite options.

In the end, choosing decking is not really about choosing a board.

It is about choosing how you want to spend your weekends. by @robertbeyonetheboard

Grey has ruled GTA backyards for years.

Clean, modern, easy to match.

Basically the black jacket of decking.

But this year, warmer colours are getting more attention.

These projects use Nextwood PVC Decking in Sand Stone, a soft warm brown that works beautifully with red brick, black railing, grass, and trees.

And because it is PVC, there is no staining every few years and no wood fibre to absorb moisture, rot, or mould.

Project: YK Woodworking (Nextwood Platinum Contractor)
Decking: Nextwood PVC Decking
Colour: Sand Stone

Choosing a colour?

Come see the boards in person and compare them for yourself.

Most weekends are kids’ lessons, errands, and maybe Wonderland.

This weekend, we ended up at a Peking Opera show.

Best surprise: Chinese and English subtitles.

The kids could follow the story.

More importantly, so could I.

I even used ChatGPT beforehand to learn the characters and plots.

Apparently, a little homework helps with opera.

A different kind of workday today.

Nextwood spent the day at Hole 4 for Hickory Dickory Decks’ annual golf tournament.

Old customers stopped by. New faces stopped by. Mike got a nice shot, but BT had no luck on hole 4… A few people came for golf and somehow left knowing more about our PVC decking and fencing than they probably expected.

No big sales pitch.

Just samples, conversations, a lot of laughs, and a good day outside.

Some times that’s enough. taken in Flamborough Hills Golf Club by @robertbeyonetheboard

This morning, I woke up to another price increase notice.
Convoy Supply says some SFS products will go up **5%–17% starting September 14**, due to Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S.-origin products and components.
If you build decks, fences, or railings, you notice numbers like these.
A project is never just the decking.
It’s screws.
Fasteners.
Aluminum.
Brackets.
Railing.
Freight.
Five percent here.
Ten percent there.
Seventeen percent somewhere else.
None of them looks particularly dramatic on its own.
Then one day, they all meet on the same quote.
For more than a year, we’ve been watching these increases work their way through the building-material business.
Nobody enjoys paying more for a screw.
But when your biggest neighbour decides to play hardball, standing up for yourself usually comes with a bill.
Apparently, sometimes that bill arrives one fastener at a time.
It’s not painless.
But if this is part of the price of Canada standing its ground, then at least we’re paying it together. šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ taken in Ontario, Canada by @robertbeyonetheboard

Tomorrow, the kids go back to school.

I woke up at 7:40 this morning, checked the news and almost let the whole day disappear from bed.

Then I remembered—this is their last day of summer.

Forget ā€œgetting ready for school.ā€ Today is for one last little adventure.

Kids, what would I do without you?
Probably stay in bed until sunset and call it a restful day. šŸ˜„

A deck is more than a row of boards.

It holds morning coffee, muddy little boots, summer dinners, quiet conversations—and the moments we don’t realize will become memories.

I’m Robert. I work with decking and outdoor building materials, but this page won’t be only about products.

Here, I’ll share short thoughts about homes, family, work, and the life we build around them—one board at a time.

Welcome to Beyond the Boards.
