“I am following Nature without being able to grasp her.”—Claude Monet

This is the last image I made of my favourite tree in the yard I grew up in.

This tree, and the landscape around it, have been lost to time and development. Soon, homes will stand where it once stood; humble, proud, quietly confident beneath the open sky.

A reminder of how fragile and fleeting nature is,
and how softly she slips through our fingers.

Let us hold her gently, with warmth,
and care for her as she has always cared for us.

My nonna, Rosa, passed away today—the mother of my mother. I was raised in a matriarchy, surrounded by strong, bold women, and she was the strongest and boldest of them all.

One of my favorite memories is peeling roasted peppers with her before Sunday lunch. She’d lift the blistered, scalding peppers off the grill with her bare hands and peel them with a speed and confidence that amazed me. That simple moment says everything about who she was and the grit she had. Her hands were the strongest I’d ever seen—seemingly impermeable to the world around her, weathered by time, and hardened by the journey she made from Italy to Canada to create a better life for her family. Those hands worked tirelessly to provide. I am grateful I got to see them in action, and I will forever cherish the moments I got to hold them.

I took this portrait of her in 2010, not realizing then how precious it would become. When I look at it now, I see my childhood and hear the beautiful chaos of our family gathered around the table: laughter, clinking glasses, and shared quiet moments. A cacophony of love.

Her prayer room was a reflection of her faith, a space of devotion and strength. May she rest peacefully in the heaven she so deeply believed in, reunited with my nonno and all those she loved. by @robertcanali
