Bassoonist Nadina Mackie and I have made a lot of recordings over the years. I have only ever taken her photos as part of a trio but never solo. She was in the studio a few weeks ago for a quick update to her gallery. Portrait photography is satisfying for me when I manage to capture a subject who is comfortably in their own skin. Nadina is a fierce performer, often fearless in her desire to take chances, and I love how that side still shows itself with the passage of time. The track is a piece by Glen Buhr we recorded with the g27 orchestra, @epaetkau conducting. by @robertdivito

Rachelle in @elysia.magazine Over the last few years I’ve been drawn to images with reduced contrast. Not that I don’t enjoy full dynamic range images anymore because, depending on the image, it can totally crush. But there is something inherently moody with an image that has compressed highlights and a faded black. Finally getting a chance to post this editorial published in @elysia.magazine featuring Rachelle Denison.In the middle of a pandemic last year Rachelle was brave enough to indulge my restlessness. 🙏She has one of those timeless faces and a genuinely beautiful spirit. I haven’t posted on here in a while. Mostly bc this platform has such mixed emotions for me, especially coming from the fashion world. It started as a photo sharing site and quickly became a place to share work in an effort to gain attention. Doing creatives is really rewarding and the process is truly the best part. Posting on here, especially in recent years, seems almost childish now. Once, trying to gain new followers and likes, now seems even insulting in that Facebook accepts all this free content, puts ads over it, and in return throttles it so no one sees the post. It’s a great deal for creatives!?I’ve noticed some of the tier A level players don’t use the platform as much. They will post periodically but mostly an exercise in keeping the account active. The influencer market has gone elsewhere and IG is just the ugly cousin with too many ads and throttled content to make room for reels. So why post this? Bc Rachelle and Patrick at Elysia deserve props and for the few people this will reach I’m happy to sing their praises. As for getting attention in the fashion industry? That horse bolted the barn. Having thousands of followers, real or fake, holds as much clout as a membership card to Dollarama.Like others I will look for other ways to navigate the fashion photography world. Not sure where yet. In the meantime I hope you like the editorial over the next week or so. Thanks for reading.
