Several years ago, the government contractor SAIC asked me to develop some design concepts to help them celebrate and promote their 35th anniversary. SAIC is an engineering and technology firm that’s all about innovation: developing solutions to improve the future. So an unusual problem presented itself: how do you visualize yesterday and tomorrow in one image?

One of my solutions was this poster that referenced the company's contributions to the Apollo missions of the 1970s, when SAIC was just getting started.

I started with a NASA photo from the Apollo 17 moon mission, which took place in 1972. The photo of astronaut Eugene Cernan walking on the Moon, with the American flag in the background and the Lunar Roving Vehicle visible on the right, is one of the most famous images in NASA history.

But I didn’t want the poster to be just about the Moon mission, because I didn’t want it to be just about the past.

Removing the photo’s moon-surface background and substituting an abstract blue environment, combined with modernist typography, effectively re-contextualized the image to be less literal and more symbolic. It now seems less anchored to a single point in time, and more of a symbol of innovation and progress. by @robertking_design

I created a six-module typographic grid as the framework for this booklet celebrating the anniversary of @apartment_zero , the modern furniture representative for many of the world's most sophisticated brands. Years ago I discovered that Indesign's numerical tools for making grids are best ignored, and figuring it out the analog way will produce superior results. Way back in 1968, the brilliant Josef Müller-Brockman explained it all in his landmark book "Grid Systems in Graphic Design" — still just as relevant and essential today. by @robertking_design

Part of a campaign I created for Marriott International that focused on the breadth of global destinations available to customers in the Marriott Rewards program. Instead of using photos of hotels, my strategy emphasized the experience of the locations, conveying themes of escape, wonder, and serenity. by @robertking_design

My identity design for Teska Museum of Art started with an abstracted T letterform. The museum's architecture is a combination of Neoclassical elements with modern gallery spaces. Conceptual project created at School of Visual Arts in New York. by @robertking_design

Art Education Journal
Magazine Redesign + Visual Identity

I developed a completely new look for this monthly journal, which is the primary trade publication for high-school art teachers. An identifiable, consistent look for cover designs was established with a single illustrator developing artwork to bring abstract concepts to life. by @robertking_design

This sculptural "floating" concrete staircase is at the Brutalist campus of University of St. Gallen, designed by Walter Förderer in 1960s Switzerland. The Swiss-born architect viewed the avant-garde structures as artistic syntheses of abstract contemporary art, where he dictated everything down to the very last detail.
