Yesterday I shared the story. Today I wanted to share the dance.

This is the main part of the moment I was writing about.

By this point, I had already become emotional watching these incredible dancers and recognizing so much in their movement. Then they invited us to join them.

What happened next wasn’t planned. The shirt coming off definitely wasn’t planned. 😂 I just stopped thinking and let myself be completely in the moment.

Movement. Rhythm. Energy. Connection.

Yesterday I tried to put into words what this meant to me.

Today, I’ll let the dance speak for itself.

This moment hit me in a way I wasn’t expecting.
Watching these dancers in South Africa, I started recognizing things. The relationship to the ground. The pulse. The rhythm. The attitude. Ways of moving that felt deeply familiar after a lifetime in swing dancing.
Then something shifted.
I wasn’t seeing their movement through the lens of swing. I was suddenly seeing swing through the lens of their movement.
I’ve known and taught for years that swing was created by Black Americans and shaped by African rhythms, movements, music and expression passed down through generations. But that night, I felt that connection differently.
When they invited us to dance with them, I was already emotional. At some point I took my shirt off. It wasn’t planned. I think I simply wanted to remove a barrier and say, I’m here with you. I honor this.
Later backstage, we hugged, laughed and celebrated together. No audience. Nothing to perform. Just people connecting through movement.
I cried tears of joy more than once that night.
Thank you, Safari Swing, for a moment I’ll never forget.
I’ve known the history for years. That night, I felt it in my body.

I’m looking for one All-Star male who would like to join me for one of my Champ Camps in Europe this October.

I’ve also decided that I could open up space for one additional All-Star couple at one or possibly both camps if the right couple is interested.

These weekends are intentionally small and intensive. Lots of dancing, individual attention, training, conversations and time to really dig into your dancing.

If this sounds like something you’ve wanted to do, message me privately and let’s talk.

Our next subject…

Portraits of @robertroyston at @bavarianopen

Story time. Robert created one of my favorite spectator memories in this dance. 2014, Madjam, Champions Jack & Jill. Robert draws Tren Veal. Baby Workout starts playing. History happens as one of the greatest dances ever unfolds. From that first hit, the crowd knew it was going to be special. I was sitting in the front, and I still remember the energy 12 years later. Now I get to photograph him. What an honor.

I chose to focus on Robert the MC today.

Robert, as the voice of West Coast Swing, is a face that just about everyone in our dance is familiar with. Whether on YouTube or Instagram, or in real life, we constantly cross paths with him.

We start with one of his most common MC moments - microphone to mouth, hand in the air, crowd silent as they wait in anticipation to find out who he is announcing.

One can just hear the image saying “Our next couple…”

I had to ask Robert for a story, because part of his MC craft is that he treats storytelling as an art form.

It is fascinating to hear how the people we respect as artists began their journey. Most passions start from being inspired by someone else who is great at it, and getting the opportunity to try it as well.

Another angle, full frame, at the mic, probably telling a humorous story to absorb crowd attention and let the judges finish their notes on the prior dance.

Good MCs know when to create time and when to speed things up. Great MCs can make both happen without the crowd noticing. Robert is a great MC.

This isn’t a dance moment, contrary to what one might think - I believe this was Robert proving to @benmorrisdance that his knees in fact do work, despite Ben’s questioning of it on the mic.

The way that Ben and Robert poke fun at each other when they are MCing back and forth is part of the magic of having the two of them at events together.

We end with the moment people don’t really see, because Robert’s job is done right - he has directed crowd attention to the next dance, and he recedes into the background, turning the mic off and taking a breather until the next opening.

SAFARI SWING: DAY TWO 🦁

How do you top day one? Apparently you head back out into the bush and let Africa take care of the rest.

Day Two brought another incredible safari and some absolutely unforgettable encounters, including getting to spend time watching these beautiful lions in their world. There is something completely different about seeing them like this. No cages. No barriers. Just us entering their space and getting lucky enough to witness it.

Every time I thought Safari Swing couldn’t possibly give us another “WOW” moment, it did.

Great people, incredible adventures, dancing, laughter, and memories I know I’ll be talking about for a very long time.

Day Two, you did not disappoint. 🦁🇿🇦

Safari Swing Day 1 🇿🇦

From the moment we arrived, I knew this wasn’t going to feel like just another dance event.

And then, within the first 10 minutes, an elephant showed up. 🐘😂

Talk about a welcome to South Africa!

Old friends. New adventures. An incredible setting and a group of dancers from around the world coming together for something pretty special.

Day one was about arriving, settling in, reconnecting, laughing, dancing, and trying to take in where we actually were. And looking back now, knowing everything that happened over the days that followed, this was only the beginning.
