“Poulenc's unflinching zest for life is audible in every movement…glorious, thick dissonances that the duo plays wholeheartedly. Gray and Hao are well-timed in the unison passages…Hao and Gray play all of it solidly.” —AllMusic

“Classical music lovers and listeners searching for background music with an intellectual edge will appreciate Palimpsest, pianist Rob Hao’s first full-length album. … Hao emphasizes shifts in texture with meticulous shaping of lines and individual notes.… Hao’s Palimpsest is a creative highlight on the album that follows the abruptly unfinished end of the Schubert sonata. An astonishingly smooth transition catapults the listener into a stimulating chaos, where fragments and shadows of Schubert’s unfinished piece swirl as though caught in a whirlwind. Repeated melodic figurations and pitch collections help ground the flurry of notes. The composition Palimpsest 571 is creative and energetic, bringing a classic composer into the frenetic energies of our own time.… Conscientious recording and production techniques capture the nuances and fine details of the interpretations that Hao has worked so diligently to create.” –AllMusic

TONIGHT: ATONAL KAT PRESENTS: CHEWY, CRUNCHY – MICHAEL FINNISSY / ANNIE ARIES

Atonal Kat returns to Cafe OTO tonight for a particularly dense edition of its sporadic sonic soirées, curated by Xenia Pestova Bennett and Ed Bennett. The series is built around exploratory music and intense listening, and this edition places the generative, improvised electronics of Annie Aries alongside a programme celebrating Michael Finnissy in his 80th year.

Bern-based Swiss-Philippine composer, sound artist and performer Annie Aries works with a customised modular synth, spatial sound and embodied performance. Her live sets explore the point where generative systems stop behaving predictably and improvisation takes over, with contemporary electronics and club music entering a practice also shaped by installation and experimental sound environments.

The second half turns to Michael Finnissy, with Mary Dullea, Rob Hao, Darragh Morgan and Xenia Pestova Bennett performing music from across his work. Born in Brixton in 1946, Finnissy began composing at four and later studied at the Royal College of Music. While there, he privately imagined his future music as a kind of “cabinet of curiosities”: an individual account of world music capable of holding together periods, genres and references with both affection and irony.

That breadth extends well beyond music. His aesthetics have been shaped by underground and avant-garde cinema, from Brakhage, Jack Smith and Warhol to Pasolini, Jarman and Godard, as well as Hokusai, Cézanne, Hockney, Rauschenberg, Satie and Ives.

Tonight’s programme includes Ninth Political Agenda, Mississippi Hornpipes, Molly House and the UK premiere of Fortsetzung von Schuberts Sonaten-Fragment D769A, plus further works.

Artist Spotlight: Rob Hao @robhao // Finnissy @ 80

In 2026, one of Britain’s most significant composers, Michael Finnissy, celebrates his 80th birthday. To mark the occasion, Australian pianist Rob Hao performs three major recent works for solo piano.

'Ninth Political Agenda' presents three contrasting settings of Lone Pilgrim, while 'Skladanje skozi slovenski pesmi' reworks Slovenian folk songs through different imagined approaches to folk performance.

Completing the programme is 'Tenth Political Agenda', written especially for Rob Hao. Exploring the life and influences of Frédéric Chopin, the work fragments and recontextualises material from Chopin and his musical influences, alongside his personal relationship with Tytus Woyciechowski.

Three works offering a fascinating insight into Finnissy’s distinctive approach to folk traditions, musical history and reinterpretation.

“…a delightful album… a comprehensive survey of all of [Poulenc's] music for two pianos… The fecundity of invention, drawing on a range of genres from classical to music-hall, is astonishing, each cue unmistakably by the composer of ‘Babar the Little Elephant.’ All in all ', une grande fête pour ‘le petite maître’.” —Jeremy Nicholas by @robhao
