Just a few pictures highlighting my week in N. Carolina at the High Point Furniture Market. I love the theatrical nature of showrooms. So many inspiring design ideas to share with my clients …. after I do some editing of my camera roll, of course. #interiordesign #hpmkt2026 #designerslife #homefurnitureanddesign #designinspiration by @robinmutointeriors
“There’s an energy in this house, which has been lived in by generations and generations. You feel it right away.” - @robinmutointeriors Historic Structure, Contemporary Life Written by Jane Trabert Schmitt. It’s always the painters who are last. After months of drawings, decisions, demolition, construction and installation, we’ve reached that peculiar stage of a project where the brand-new kitchen is wrapped in plastic and my crew is busy scraping, plastering and painting their way around it. This house was built in the early 1900s, with 9-foot ceilings and wonderfully substantial crown and baseboard moldings. From the beginning, we knew the new kitchen had to feel as though it belonged here — not a period reproduction, but something that understood the house. There’s a little Cape Cod in it, a little Americana, and even a whisper of Upstairs, Downstairs — the beautiful working kitchen below stairs in an old English house. White, with touches of blue, fresh but familiar. For now, though, it belongs to the painters. And somewhere underneath all that plastic is the kitchen I’ll show you next. #InteriorDesign #KitchenRemodel #BehindTheScenes #DesignProcess #RochesterNY by @robinmutointeriors
There’s a line in the “fine print” of my proposals that I like to joke about: marriage counseling is billed separately. It usually gets a laugh. But when you’re designing a home for two people, a little psychology inevitably finds its way into the process. In this house, the couple arrived at a rather civilized solution: some rooms would be his, and some would be hers. The formal living room became his private men’s club—a quiet retreat built around a pair of espresso leather Chesterfield sofas. In exchange, she took the kitchen dining area, which evolved into the family room, beginning with a French country table and chairs by Grange and a much softer point of view. The thread running through it all was Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. Every room was painted the same color, yet it never seemed quite the same twice. It shifts with the light, the furnishings, and the mood of a room—an elusive little chameleon that somehow knew how to get along with everyone. Perhaps that was the real marriage counselor. #InteriorDesign #InteriorDesigner #DesignPsychology #ColorInDesign #RochesterNY by @robinmutointeriors
Labor Day weekend seems like an appropriate time to share a room designed around the idea of rest and quiet luxury. This cedar covered house is built into a wooded hillside overlooking parkland. From its expansive windows, there is almost no evidence of the built world—just trees, changing light and the landscape beyond. I wanted the bedroom to feel as though it belonged there. Natural slate, walnut, leather and softly textured silk create warmth without asking for attention. There is very little in the room that is there simply to fill it. The room itself is an unusual five-sided shape. Rather than trying to correct its irregularity, I let it become part of the design. The bed found its place on an angle—not because symmetry demanded it, but because somehow, that is where it felt right. Perhaps that is what I love about Wabi-Sabi. It leaves room for irregularity, for natural materials, for restraint—and for the possibility that something doesn’t need to be perfected to feel complete. #WabiSabiDesign #InteriorDesign #NaturalMaterials #QuietLuxury #rochesterny by @robinmutointeriors
I learned to draw interiors by hand. There was something wonderful about those drawings—the weight of a line, the slight imperfections, the feeling that you could see an idea taking shape on the page. When computer drawing came along, I embraced it. But I never quite wanted my drawings to look like they came from a computer. Apparently, technology has finally caught up with me. Today I can create drawings with the warmth and character I’ve always loved, then watch those same ideas move off the page and into three dimensions. These images are from a recent kitchen project—a little journey from drawing to rendering, and eventually, to the real thing. After all these years, I still love watching an idea become something you can almost walk into. #interiordesign #designprocess #interiordrawings #kitchendesign #rochesterny by @robinmutointeriors
Someone recently asked me what keeps me going after all these years. I think a large part of it is that no two projects—and no two clients—are ever quite the same. Designing someone’s home is surprisingly personal. You get to know how people live, what matters to them, what they respond to, and often things they haven’t quite found the words for themselves. Those relationships have always been one of the most meaningful parts of my work. Then there is curiosity. I still love discovering a material I haven’t used before, learning a new way of making something, or finding an answer to a problem that wasn’t obvious at first. After all these years, there are still things I haven’t seen, things I haven’t tried, and things I haven’t figured out yet. Maybe that’s what keeps me going. The work has never given me the chance to become bored with it. #interiordesign #interiordesigner #designlife #rochesterny #interiordesigninspiration by @robinmutointeriors
When I was invited to design the parlor of the Rochester Philharmonic Designer Showhouse, I knew what people would expect. A room like this—with soaring ceilings, extraordinary millwork, leaded glass, a magnificent fireplace, and a crystal chandelier—almost invites you to recreate the past My question wasn’t whether contemporary furniture and modern art could live in a room like this. It was whether they could belong there so naturally that they felt as though they had always been part of its story. The answer wasn’t found in making a bold statement. It was found in proportion, restraint, and respect for the architecture. Generously scaled seating with clean, graceful lines. Luxurious fabrics without ornament. Contemporary paintings and sculpture that brought energy and sophistication while allowing the room’s remarkable character to remain the protagonist. It was a leap of faith. I had never seen this idea carried quite this far before, and I wasn’t certain how visitors would respond. Then the doors opened. People didn’t walk in and see a clash between old and new. They smiled. They relaxed. They lingered. That was the moment I realized I hadn’t designed a contemporary room inside a historic mansion. I had simply allowed two different eras to feel completely at home with one another. #InteriorDesign #HistoricInteriors #ShowhouseDesign #ContemporaryDesign #RochesterNY by @robinmutointeriors
Google tells me natural slate is still in style… provided it’s the right color, the right size, and laid the right way. Apparently mine missed the memo. This bathroom was designed more than twenty years ago, and looking at it again reminded me why I don’t spend much time chasing trends. The goal was never to create a fashionable bathroom. It was to create one that belonged to its surroundings. The slate floor and wall tiles are regionally sourced, the vanity was made locally from walnut and mahogany, and it’s topped with a beautiful sink of hand hammered copper. Beyond the picture window which is covered with a natural woven shade is the view of a wooded hillside. The material selections simply continue the conversation nature had already started. #InteriorDesign #BathroomDesign #DesignPhilosophy #NaturalMaterials #RochesterNY by @robinmutointeriors

Welcome to my blog. You will find my blog page on my website. Some might find it quite boring since I purposely do not include any pictures. It’s more of a personal notebook that I use to capture thoughts, ideas and commentary. robin@robinmuto.com #interiordesigner #homerenovations #rochesterny #inspireddesign #homeiswheretheheartis❤️ by @robinmutointeriors
If you know me, you know I don’t just hand off a design and walk away. Long before I became an interior designer, I was studying art, drawing, painting, and later working in clay. Making things taught me that every finished piece is the result of countless decisions, practiced hands, and respect for the craft. These are the contractors, fabricators, installers, and artisans who take my drawings and transform them into places people call home. Every room you see here exists because of their talent, dedication, and pride in their work. This is my tribe. #interiordesign #craftsmanship #behindthescenes #rochesterny #mytribe by @robinmutointeriors
