@mbmeeks.blockprints @reelflyknight and I signed up to mentor some sweet kiddos in a fly fishing event and decided to make an extra shindig out of the experience with a cabin on the Toccoa and some fly fishing shenanigans. I didn’t quite prepare my heart for what was to come and to sum it up my memories from this are postcard worthy! Laughs, cries, heckles, howls, cuss words, love words, hoots & hollers were echoed around the great smoky mountains. No…. That was not a Sasquatch call….. Sarah just caught another huge brown trout. Or that was me falling neck deep into a hole without a wading belt on. Maybe that was the moment my hair smoldered up in a blaze of glory as I lit the fireplace. Or MB landing 3 rainbow trout back to back in front of a beautiful old river mill with a big audience watching. We all basked in the glory of trout fishing and its highs and lows. Figuring out what the heck we are doing one mistake at a time while continuing to net beautiful mountain fish one after another. But it wasn’t even about that, it was about the chase… the pursuit….and letting that fish go just to do it all over again and again till your fingers hurt and your bones are cold. Auburn Mayfly Project 2024
☀️ Chattahoochee Flyfishing Float ☀️

Witnessing the personal growth of our Mayfly Project Kids is a humbling and inspiring experience. For months, they work to prepare for our annual float day, a culmination of lessons and activities designed to foster confidence, resilience, and a love for the outdoors.

What truly amazes me is the ability for our mentees to overcome challenges and form meaningful connections in a new environment. Despite the hardships they’ve faced, these children consistently demonstrate remarkable strength and resilience. Beyond learning to tie a fly or cast a line, they’re developing essential life skills like teamwork, respect, and healthy relationships.

As we enter our fourth year in Auburn, we’re thrilled for the success of Alabama’s two newest chapters in Birmingham and Huntsville. With nearly 40 kids as proud Mayfly Project anglers state wide, we’re making a tangible impact on the future voices for our communities and our local watersheds.

Never have I fished for Smallmouth but for once I got a to be a passenger princess on the USS David Horky(most commonly known as @davidmatthewflyfishing ) We floated a meandering 9 miles in north Alabama on the hunt for a good time. It didn’t take long for that good time to find us as soon as we casted a couple frogs. A sleepy little rural area once inhabited by the Chickasaw nation now idles on in time as a fly fishing treasure. This stretch of river is bursting with feisty smallies, giant sycamore trees, herons, bald eagles, and sandwiched layers of limestone cliffs displayed like a show&tell of time. In between the luxuries of having Horky tie on our flies and net our fish, we wore blisters on our hands hitting every seam, eddy, ledge, and pocket we floated past. There were many hoots, and where there are hoots, there are hollers! @mbmeeks.blockprints and I seem to always find the joy in simply being on the water but we get a little extra feverish when the fish are hittin’ hard. I wish I had written down some of the hilariously clever things we stir up in river float conversation but as soon as we get on with reality that seems to vanish like a fading dream. I try so hard to hold on to those pure moments and the feeling. There is literally nothing like it. But alas it leaves me in a daydream as I anticipate my next adventure of the floatin’ follies chasin’ the Smallies. Thank you Horky, for giving two tired working mamas a good day on the water and allowing us to take these moments and recharge ourselves. We are headed to see our queen! Nova’s a Ferrel kid in her little wild spirit and heart. She’s really excited that her first concert will be with @sierraelizabethferrell . I thank God every day for these girls. They give me purpose, faith, ambition, and a heart full of joy. Being a mom has so many challenges, but the gratitude that comes with every milestones… every moment of growth, achievement, or new self discovery my girls make that is far beyond my influence… hits me in the gut. To know these small humans have a purpose here far beyond making me a proud mom! I am in awe every day that I was lucky enough to be chosen to raise two of the sweetest little souls. 🫶🏻 Happy Mother’s Day to everyone, especially my mom, my sister, and the strong women who have imprinted on my life, teaching me how to be a mama, too! by @robinsimms

We had exciting day at Montgomery Whitewater Nature School with our crawfish friend, baby turtle, and frog eggs! These kiddos love studying the critters and then releasing them back to their habitats! We are so lucky to have a beautiful and diverse piece of Alabama to explore! I couldn’t be more proud of my team at Montgomery Whitewater for pulling together one of the coolest programs offered in the river region! It’s just the beginning! We have learned a lot through our fall pilot program of Nature School and today was our first day of the spring Nature School for 2026! Super shout out to @maxcreditunion for the sponsorship of this program! Our guides Emily and Faith created some magic in the wetlands area of our sycamore trail for 14 busy little scientists. I am absolutely thrilled and deeply grateful that SoulGrown has chosen to share a short read about my journey back to my Alabama roots and finding my way to Montgomery Whitewater! It is a true honor to be highlighted by an organization that celebrates the incredible spirit and growth of our state. There is a vision for the future of Montgomery Whitewater driven by not only myself but several tenacious members of our talented team. Our MW family has taken the leap to curate a place where novices to the outdoors feel empowered and seasoned adventurers find new challenges. We are committed to fostering an atmosphere that is truly all inclusive and welcoming. Breaking down barriers so everyone, regardless of experience or background, can engage. Most importantly focused on the science, safety, education, and thrill of paddlesports, whitewater, and nature along the Alabama River. As I transition from HR to Director of Riverfront and Education, I’m humbled to serve our team and support this catalyst for uniting our community. It's wild to think that 14 years ago, my life plan involved zero kiddos and a permanent address in a van by the river. I vividly remember a John Prine song, beautifully played by a friend around a campfire in an Alaskan guide yard, fueling a new daydream. Life, as it often does, had a hilariously different script in mind.

Fast forward to today, and here I am, a mama not just once, but twice! Our journey has been a winding road from the wilds of Alaska to the beauty of Canada, and now the charm of Alabama. First Ruby then 7 years later Nova joining this wild ride and adding to my ever-growing "mama resume."

Honestly, if I have one true flex in this life, it's being a mama. It's the role I feel I was truly meant for, and I'm endlessly grateful for the chance to empower these incredible little humans to become their best selves, in all their wonderfully weird ways! ❤️ #blowupyourtv by @robinsimms
