When her web developer’s company changed hands, Dr. Mandana Ahmadian had 60 days to move her website. She has run Bellevue Endocrine Consultants in Bellevue, WA since 2005, and her site had grown one addition at a time over twenty years. Opus 5.5 does most of what Fable 5.1 does, at less than half the price. Anthropic released it on September 22. Here’s what changed: → Fable-level on most work, and ahead of Fable 5.1 on Terminal-Bench 4.0 → List price down 20%, to $4 / $20 per million tokens → About 40% cheaper to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads, per Anthropic → Available on the Claude API, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure What it means for your team: the biggest model is rarely the right default. Start with the smallest model that handles the job, step up one tier when it falls short, and stop at the first one that works. That habit alone keeps AI costs in check without giving up quality. The sticker price isn't the ceiling. It's a bet on how little of the allowance most users consume. Using SemiAnalysis's max-usage figures, the break-even threshold can be surprisingly low: • ChatGPT Plus: 11.4% usage • ChatGPT Pro: 5.7% • Claude Pro and Max 5x: about 20% • Claude Max 20x: about 10% At maximum usage, a $200 ChatGPT Pro plan represents up to roughly $14,000 a month at API rates. Claude Max 20x comes to about $8,000. Important caveat: API pricing includes margin, so those figures are not the vendors' literal compute costs. They're a way to see how heavily flat-rate plans subsidize their most active users. That matters because subsidies change. Models move behind usage-based pricing. Limits tighten. Features shift tiers. For a small practice, the lesson is simple: don't build a critical workflow around today's subscription terms. Before you automate it, answer four questions: 1. What happens if the price doubles? 2. Can you export the data quickly? 3. What fails if this model disappears? 4. What backup keeps you compliant and operating? The real risk isn't the monthly fee. Same $5 / $25 per million tokens as the model it replaces. It’s now the default on Claude Max and available on Pro. Anthropic’s own framing: Opus 5 gets close to Fable 5’s intelligence at half the cost. For a business running daily workloads, that gap is the whole decision. Four tiers, one family: Haiku 4.5 ($1/$5) → Sonnet 5 ($3/$15, intro $2/$10 through Aug 31) → Opus 5 ($5/$25) → Fable 5 ($10/$50). Start at the bottom.
