Thanks to @andrewtindall, Chief Growth Officer at System1, for namedropping Rob in his recent article for @thedrummag, “Dull but distinctive? Recognizable rubbish will not grow your brand.” Rob’s point, which Andrew is echoing here, should be obvious: When we talk about brands differentiating, the goal isn’t for customers to describe those brands as different. The goal is that they describe them differently than they describe competitors. Obvious, right? But believe it or not, some academic papers cited in arguments against the importance/effectiveness of differentiation did exactly that—they asked people “Would you call this brand different?” It’s a weird question, and shouldn’t be the basis of a case against differentiation. Read Andrew’s article for more, and check out Rob’s original article in WARC (paywall), “What does Byron Sharp’s research really tell us about differentiation?” by @robmeyerson
This is Kapferer's Brand Identity Prism. I always wondered why it was called a prism when it's just a hexagon with some internal line segments, but maybe this 3D version solves it—could be a triangular prism viewed from the "top"? Anyway, we dig into one of these frameworks over on the How Brands Are Built blog every now and then. Previously, we've looked at the Unilever Key, the David Aaker Brand Vision Model, and Marty Neumeier's Brand Commitment Matrix. If you've ever used this framework, I'd love to hear what you think of it. If you're not familiar with it, check out the post—just search for "brand identity prism" on How Brands Are Built—to learn more. #brandstrategy #brandingframework by @robmeyerson
Just a few months of 2026 left, and some of the most recognizable brands are still switching things up. Here are a few more recent logo changes that’ve caught our attention: 🏎️ McLaren: Taps back into its heritage with a classic wordmark. 🌴 Tropical Smoothie Cafe: Modernizes its identity with bold typography and a fresh tropical-inspired icon. ✨ Carter’s: Trades its traditional wordmark for playful, handwritten lettering. 💻 Intuit: Shifts to lowercase lettering with a “quirky” initial i. 📱 Instagram: Moves from its iconic script-style wordmark to a simpler, more contemporary typeface designed for clarity and versatility. 💊 Novo Nordisk: Shortens its name to “Novo” and simplifies its longtime identity with a more compact logo. While some brands are embracing minimalism, others are leaning into heritage, personality, and distinctiveness. Alll six of these brand faced a common challenge: modernizing without losing significant equity or recognizability. Which brand(s) do you think did it best? #branding #rebrand #branding #brandstrategy #logodesign by @robmeyerson
From written text to a designed wordmark, how a name looks matters. @RobMeyerson joined @Phillip_Oakley on @ThePOShowPodcast to discuss why length, readability, and visual presence deserve a place in the naming process. This is the @unilever Brand Key framework for brand strategy. (Really more of a keyHOLE, though, isn't it? Strangely inaccurate name.) Every now and then, we dig into one of these frameworks over on the How Brands Are Built blog. Previously, we've looked at the Brand Identity Prism, the Aaker Brand Vision Model, and Marty Neumeier's Brand Commitment Matrix. If you've ever used this framework, I'd love to hear what you think of it. A Tale of Two AIs: A few days ago I was in the car alone, thinking about John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men (as one does). I couldn't remember how it ended, so I did what any 2026 iPhone owner would do: "Hey Siri, remind me what happens at the end of Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck." Siri: "Ok, I added 'what happens at the end of mice and men by Steinbeck' to the Today list." 🙄 Amazing service, @apple , thank you. I'll get to it right after that laundry load I need to do. It would've been funny if it had been a joke, but it wasn't. Hold that thought. --- Later that day, I was using @claudeai to do some name brainstorming for a client. I was looking for words that contained X and suggested intelligence, etc. I guess I was getting punchy after hours of working on the same, narrow problem, and I threw a curveball in. Just for my own entertainment—just to see how the AI would react. Me: "Cortex? Vertex? Helix? Laxative?" I was half-expecting a serious response, e.g., "Laxative implies expelling waste, not intelligence. I'd steer clear of it as a product name." Instead, I got this response from Claude: "Technically a throughput story. Hard pass." 😆 Me: "Soft pass, hopefully." 😂 Claude: "Fair. Let's keep things moving." 🤣 --- Not bad for workplace humor! The fact that I can, in the span of a few hours, get such a dumb response from one AI tool, then engage in a little playful banter with another—these are the stories I'll tell my kids and grandkids when they ask what it was like living through the mass adoption of AI. What a time to be alive (until AI gets us all)!! 🤖💀 #AI #Claude #Siri #Anthropic #Apple #LLMs by @robmeyerson
Just in time for kickoff, the story behind another kinda weird @nfl team name: The @clevelandbrowns. @robmeyerson shares the origin. Paul Brown was already a star football coach in Ohio. When he became the team's first coach, fans and journalists referred to the team as "Brown's team." It stuck, even though Paul Brown allegedly disliked it. Watch the video for more info on Paul Brown's "cover story" for the name, the not-Brown helmets, and the team mascot, Brownie the Elf. #nfl #football #clevelandbrowns #brandnaming #nflhistory #browns #DawgPound by @robmeyerson
A great brand name starts with an idea—but getting to the right one takes a process. 💡 A few weeks ago @RobMeyerson joined @Philip_Oakley on @ThePOShowPodcast to discuss the art of brand naming, from generating ideas to narrowing the options and finding a name clients can use with confidence. To listen to the full podcast and learn more about the thinking behind the name, visit the link below. 🎙️ #BrandNaming #BrandStrategy #ThePOShow #Podcast #Naming by @robmeyerson
