Join us on Friday, October 16 at Tropa Modern Filipino as we celebrate Filipino History Month with a special edition of Karaoke Dinner.

Food is central to celebrating Filipino American History Month (FAHM) every October. While the month officially honors history, labor contributions, civil rights, and community heritage, cuisine is viewed as a living record of that.

Food plays a major role in FAHM celebrations through several historical connections:

Preserving Migration Stories: Dishes like adobo, pancit, and lumpia reflect trade networks, indigenous techniques, and historical influences.

Honoring Labor History: Early Filipino immigrants—such as the Manongs who worked in agricultural fields, fisheries, and canneries throughout the 20th century—built tight-knit communities centered around shared meals and communal cooking.

For the Filipino diaspora, food is the ultimate bridge between generations. Cooking family recipes—passing down the precise tang of a sinigang broth or the crispness of a lumpia wrapper—preserves oral history, keeps elders’ memories alive, and connects future generations to their ancestral roots.

In Filipino culture, food is far more than sustenance—it is connection, history, hospitality, and identity. The phrase “Kain tayo!” (“Let’s eat!”) is often the very first greeting you hear upon entering a Filipino home.

In a Filipino household, asking “Kumain ka na?”(“Have you eaten yet?”) is synonymous with asking “How are you?” or saying “I love you.” Offering food is the primary way Filipinos show care, warmth, and respect to loved ones and strangers alike.

Dine with us, drink with us and in true Filipino fashion, sing with us as we celebrate our rich culture through our love languages, food and music.

The unimaginable happened last Tuesday. We were invited to bring our karaoke event to the legendary, world-renowned Yoshi’s in Oakland—the very stage that has hosted some of the most influential and iconic musicians over the last 50 years. It was truly an amazing experience, and honestly, the most special event I’ve ever produced.

But this wasn’t something I did alone. This was something WE did.

It started with my brother and good friend, restaurateur @jb_balingit, who gave us a space at his restaurant @tropa_eats in Lafayette to launch our monthly Karaoke Brunch. It was instantly special. Food and music are two things that bring people of all backgrounds together, which is deeply rooted in Filipino culture.

From there, our foundation grew. The crew and the fam: the talented voices of @robp_ and @djmicbrito of @composure.music, my heart Monica of @ladiesofonevo1ce, DJ @jayou, Mary, and @racheljasmin. They showed up every single time without hesitation because they simply love to sing. This milestone doesn’t happen without them.

And finally, YOU! Thank you for showing up for us with your praise, love, encouragement, and most importantly, your presence. This is for you.

🎵 To every single performer who stepped onto that stage: Thank you for sharing your voice. You were definitely seen, heard, and felt. Congratulations to you all for some incredibly memorable performances!

✨ To Hal and the Yoshi’s family: We can’t express our gratitude enough. It was truly a dream come true. You made every single person feel like a headliner that night.

In August 2025, JB Balingit and Fran Boogie launched a mission at @tropa_eats in Lafayette with one goal: to prove that nothing unites people quite like food and music.

This isn’t just a business for them; it’s rooted in our culture. In a Filipino household, every gathering is defined by two things—a massive spread of delicious food and a shared microphone. They created Karaoke Dinner to bring that exact soul, connection, and “house party” energy to the community.

Now, they are taking that mission to the legendary stage at Yoshi’s Oakland for a special Tuesday night takeover on June 23. 🎤✨

We all truly believe that food and music are the ultimate universal languages, capable of bringing people of all backgrounds together. To share this experience with you in such an iconic setting is something special.

What to expect:

⚡️ The Vibe: High-energy and inclusive. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a “shower-singer” who just loves a good time, this night is for you. With music by DJ Jayou!

🍣 The Menu: Incredible food and signature drinks from the Campari Group and Yoshi’s world-class kitchen.

🎤 The Stage: This is your chance to sing on one of the most celebrated stages in the Bay Area.

🤯 The Surprises: You never know who might jump on the mic—we’ve seen surprise appearances from members of One Vo1ce, Drop N’ Harmony, and Composure Music in the past.
