The King Prawn Walked In and Took Over the Joint 🍤

Forget easing into this one.

The Singapore chilli king prawn at R.R Restaurant was the reason to be there.

Big, meaty king prawn, sweet and firm through the centre, absolutely drenched in a glossy chilli sauce that hit with proper balance. Tomato sweetness first, then savoury depth, then the chilli warmth slowly rolling in behind it without bulldozing everything else.

The sauce clung to every part of the prawn, working its way into the shell and meat, with fried shallot bringing crunch, coriander lifting the richness and fresh chilli giving it that final little kick.

Honestly, this thing had presence.

It wasn’t just “good seafood”. It was one of those dishes where everyone at the table goes quiet for a second because the flavour lands harder than expected.

And those little buns alongside it were lethal.

Soft, slightly sweet and basically engineered for soaking up every last bit of that sauce. Once the prawn was gone, the plate still had work to do.

That whole dish had proper rhythm. Sweet, spicy, savoury, rich, fresh, soft, crisp. Every element pushing the next one forward.

Then we moved onto the rest.

The salt and pepper squid was solid. Crisp coating, tender enough, decent chips. Not mind-blowing, not disappointing. Just your classic good pub feed doing exactly what it says on the tin.

The garlic broccolini was actually a smart little side too. Fresh, crisp and garlicky enough to cut through all the richer flavours.

And obviously there was a cold Coopers on the table, because we are still in Adelaide and some traditions deserve protection. 🍺

Squid: respectable.
Broccolini: underrated support act.
Coopers: mandatory cultural infrastructure.
Singapore chilli king prawn: absolute headliner.

I’d go back for that prawn alone.
