The main thing that pushed me towards wellness was the lack of Dominican representation in the spaces that had the most significant impacts on my life. Every class I went to barely had any people that looked like me attending let alone leading them. @wellnessforthepeoplefoundation made this happen today, not just by hiring me, but three Dominicans who are shaking shit up in NYC! I remember vividly how people reacted when I told them I will stop pursuing my dreams of writing and focus on this so that I can change an entire culture, some laughed, some been tapped in with me ever since. I vowed to stay true to myself in that process, to not loose the things I’ve learned from growing up in Harlem, so the next time someone walks in to teach a meditation or a yoga class while wearing Jordans you know exactly where they come from 📸 @carlosbecerra.art (thank you for capturing these gems) taken in Prospect Park Boat House by @robsboring

A crew of early risers, who hit the trails before dawn to be greeted by the sun … “The Rooster Club” Thank you to all 30 people who showed up for our inaugural hike. The best part about having front row seats to experience the first light of the day, is doing it together. This isn’t a summer recap, mostly just my latest film roll that I recently developed and a chance for me to speak my truth NYC gives you something you don’t really get anywhere else. The chance to be posted up in the hood, emerged in a dying culture & at the same time be in close proximity to nature. We speak about the concrete jungle as if access to nature is far fetched, and that’s by design. More than 60% of NY is forested, yet 92% of hikers in New York identify as white. I will keep yelling “Listen to the birds, not the news,” until we have free busses leaving Washington Heights that take us to these spaces taken in New York City by @robsboring

How many people still sore from these 5000 pushups? As we wrap Year Two and I sit with these images, I want to hang them in a gallery because of its rarity. It’s rare to see the women doing calisthenics, the men doing yoga, and the kids outside climbing walls. What we have created is only possible because you showed up all summer with no expectations and allow the collective to inspire your next step forward / or crawl. Thank you everyone for making $FREE.99 something that gave people FOMO, I have so many messages talking about next year already, but what I really want to talk about is how this year, we gave it our all even after the sun disappeared! If there’s one thing $FREE.99 has taught me, is that our hands are where transformation begins. Gripping the bar, pulling our own weight, yet those same hands become a force of community, reaching out to support, and uplifting one another. Today marks our last $FREE.99 session before @niketraining takes over on 9/2. This year has been incredible and I want to thank every single person who has used this opportunity to pour into themselves; whether it was all eight weeks or one. If you have never been to any, there’s always next year. @heyjosestudio My brother, I cannot thank you enough for not only shooting this series, but for our conversations and how that has put a battery on my back. Yesterday I was asked what my motivation is to put these on if I’m not making any money out of them, and my response surprised me. I thought I put these on because after strategizing other brands visions for the past 13 years, it feels amazing to direct my own. Getting money in the rain both physically and mentally. To many, $FREE.99 has reminded us how far our minds can push our bodies, whether you’ve only done the calisthenics portion, the yoga, or both. Listen to the birds, not the news. The best part about being an explorer is that you naturally find people who are like you, who value being in nature. People who are excited about hiking/kayaking as many miles as necessary to disconnect.
