What a throwback song, right?!? 💕
So I realized I’ve been lying to myself this whole time because I actually do like second chance romances. ESPECIALLY when they’re childhood lovers 🥹 You’re pretty much guaranteed some ANGST and I just love me a book that makes me CRY. 😭

I MADE IT THROUGH BOOK 4🎉🥳
I was close to calling it quits there 😅 The first half of the book left me a little confused and bored, but the last half was CAPTIVATING as Kase, our MMC, tries to convince himself and Malin, our FMC, that being with him is dangerous. It was a very “noo stay away from me I’m bad news✋🏼 but actually don’t, come here so I can keep you safe in my arms👀” moment. You get so much angst and yearning in these scenes and I was eating it up.

I want to highlight the cool and unique powers our MCs have. Kase is LJ Andrew’s shadow daddy. But he’s so much better. His power is the manifestation of fear itself. He just happens to be a shadow daddy because one of the most common fears is the dark. Now this is cool and all, but my FAVORITE part about this is the way LJAndrews balances his power in this one scene.

Basically the good guys are JUST about to escape the bad guys on their boat, but the bad guy castle guards outnumbered them and captured Kase. Kase uses his powers to send the boat further away for the crew to escape. Well, the question was why didn’t Kase just use his powers to kill the castle guards??? He COULDNT because at that moment, the castle guards did not FEAR Kase because they knew they had the upper hand, and Kase’s OWN FEAR of his crew being captured was STRONGER. So he was only able to manipulate HIS OWN FEAR to help his friends escape. Isn’t that neat?!? What a unique power limitation, I loved it. He’s not some overly powered dude who somehow makes shadows tactile. lol

Anyways, Malin Strom, which I hope is a play on maelstrom, is known as the Memory Thief. She has the unique powers to steal memories. Her limitation is proximity. For the living she needs the living breath so she kisses people to breathe in their breath (ew? 🤢)to steal their memories. But Malin’s full powers are still yet to be discovered! On to book 5!

I love a polarizing book. How people can perceive the same book differently amazes me. The FOMO I had for this book was real.
Unfortunately, I’m on the end of NOT liking this book. In fact, this was supposed to be a completely different post a couple hours ago 🤣 but I decided to do my good deed for the year and be ✨nice✨. 😀

What I did like:
👍🏼 They actually punched and shot each other lol
👍🏼 Get you a man like Jameson
👍🏼 Shadera was cool in the beginning

What didn’t work for me:
👎🏼 President Serel was just rude and evil and mistreated literally everyone? That’s not a fearsome president. He was missing cunning charisma needed to win over people and be influential. That would’ve made him REALLY scary.
👎🏼 The Vow made absolutely no god damn sense. I can elaborate but spoilers.
👎🏼 The world building made no sense.
👎🏼 TOO many Hunger Games influences (the song? Cmon)
👎🏼 The twists and reveals made no sense and were lackluster because I didn’t care about any of the characters. The significance of who they were was never explained. They were names mentioned in passing then suddenly became major players.
👎🏼 Traumatizing events and actions were thrown in just for shock value and for the sake of a “dark romance” and had no sustenance. Some of the reasonings for the trauma made absolutely ZERO sense.
👎🏼 The description of the masks made no sense. Masks were SO important to the book. And yet I don’t even know what the heck one looks like besides one being OBSIDIAN. Like I can’t even find fan art for the masks and it’s probably because no one else knows what the HELLY🚁 they’re supposed to look like??
👎🏼 Plot holes for days 🧀🧀🧀
👎🏼 and more.

I honestly can’t even say I enjoyed the vibes. I couldnt even enjoy the spice scene we got because I was over it. I was disappointed because I thought the book had a strong start! Shadera started off really cool! And then everything just kept derailing and I was very sad. I’m sorry friends. I will not be reading book 2, but of course we can still be friends if you did enjoy the book 😀 I aint yuckin anyone else yum 🤪

Does anyone else have the toxic trait of not enjoying a book after the main couple gets together? 😅

This took forever for me to finish. I pushed myself to finish because I know book 4 will be a new kingdom with new characters. I did not vibe with this book at all, but the end of the book finally had some action that kept my interest.

What I liked:
🫧 the transition to the next trilogy
🫧 new cool powers were introduced
🫧 prophecies and shit

What didn’t work for me:
🍅 self sacrificing behavior
🍅 is everyone just freakin alive?
🍅 fmc gets lost in the sauce

Don’t get me wrong, the series is still good. I’m excited for the next book. On to the next Broken Kingdom lol. Making my way through the LJAndrewsverse 😭

The way the entire tone of the book just CHANGES after 60% is INSANE.
Have you ever disliked and liked a book at the same time??? Because this is my dilemma right now.

This book gave serious Zutara vibes. Like imagine if Katara was set up in an arranged marriage with Zuko in a deal to get the Fire Nation to send food to the Water Tribe. So now, Zuko comes to deliver Katara to live in the Fire Nation.

The first half of the book is pretty much a month long journey of them traveling from Water tribe to Fire Nation. It was ok. But it began to feel extremely tropey.
We had forced proximity, one horse, one bed, one tent, he falls first, touch her and die, and he teaches her to dance and more that i can’t remember lol. This reminded me so much of Powerless I was losing hope real fast 🤣
On top of this, you get another arc of basically Katara settling into the Fire Nation. Which was also another bore.

AND THENNN EVERYTHING CHANGED WHEN THE PLOT TWIST ATTACKED!!🔥🔥
I was GAGGED. My flabbers were GHASTED. I went flying through the rest of the book. It was such a fun read with all the twists and reveals.

I thought this was executed pretty well for a stand-alone. The author fit a lot into this small book. I felt satisfied with the ending and I’m glad it was kept to one book. It was a fairly mild fantasy palate cleanser.

I definitely recommend this book for people who enjoy the slow climb up the roller coaster embracing the anticipation before the big drop. 🎢
