Many congratulations to Nneamaka, a social worker in the council's adult care service, who has been shortlisted for a coveted national award.

Nneamaka is up for an award in the newly qualified adult social worker of the year section, at the acclaimed Social Worker of the Year Awards.

The Social Worker of the Year Awards is the only major national awards event for social work in England, attracting hundreds of entries every year and reaching millions of people with positive stories of outstanding social work.

Councillor Wazir, cabinet member for adult care, said: “This is lovely and deserved recognition for Nneamaka and showcases Rochdale’s caring side at its very best. Following adult care’s good CQC rating this underlines the high-quality care and support the council is delivering for residents across the borough. Best of luck to Nneamaka at the awards ceremony.”

The need for invasive post-mortems in the local area could be reduced by up to 80 per cent thanks to pioneering new digital autopsies.

The innovative service is being delivered by the Coroner’s Office for Greater Manchester, in partnership with the NHS, specialist post-mortem imaging provider Anubix, and medical imaging provider TIC Health.

Teams will use post-mortem imaging to check if a cause of death can be determined without the need for traditional invasive post-mortems, a process that can cause further distress to relatives during the grieving process.

Councillor Neil Emmott, leader of the council, said: “This is a highly sensitive issue that has been carefully handled. Working in partnership across the health sector, this will help to futureproof the coroner’s service and ensure families and loved ones continue to get the best possible support. "

We’re incredibly proud of our cared for children and young people and to celebrate their achievements, we recently held our annual special awards ceremony, ‘Our Big Day’ to mark their accomplishments.

During the day we handed out hundreds of medals to young people up to the age of 12 in recognition of the wonderful nominations they have received from carers, social workers and teachers which highlighted their individual and group achievements.

From being outstanding role models and demonstrating care towards others, to showcasing their determination, resilience and a positive attitude, these awards paid tribute to the special journeys they have already undertaken.

Awards were also given to those who have demonstrated positive engagement or progress in education, vocational or sporting achievement and outstanding efforts in extracurricular activities.

In addition to an awards ceremony, our cared for children also enjoyed a full day of exciting entertainment and activities with their families and carers.

From trampolines, fun fair rides and meeting iconic characters like Spiderman to face painting, outdoor amusements and lots more, there was something for everyone to enjoy, with lots of special childhood moments created on the day.

Local foster carer Mel Jones was invited to Number 10 Downing Street yesterday, alongside fellow foster carers across the country, in recognition of the ongoing difference she helps to make to the lives of children and young people in care.

This invitation came as part of a wider launch of the @educationgovuk's first national fostering recruitment campaign which aims to encourage more people to consider whether fostering could fit their lives.

As a single carer working full time, Mel has cared for 14 children over the past 18 months for Rochdale Borough Council and currently helps to provide short-break and emergency care.

The council’s adult care staff came together to celebrate the recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) ‘good’ rating for the service.

The council was given a CQC rating of 75 per cent, with inspectors praising a well-led service that delivers high-quality care and support for people living in Heywood, Middleton, Pennines and Rochdale.

In the inspection report adult care staff were praised as a passionate workforce, focused on delivering better outcomes for older and vulnerable people.

At the event, staff from across the service were thanked by the cabinet member for adult care, Councillor Shah Wazir, and adult care’s leadership team for their tireless work to improve the lives of residents across the borough.

Councillor Wazir said: “As the inspectors highlighted in their report, we have an outstanding and committed adult care staff delivering high-quality services for residents. We are very proud of our ‘good’ rating, which reflects the work our staff do and is a credit to every one of them.”
