Nobody chooses their name. Or almost nobody.
It’s not something we question or even choose to like, we just embrace it.

I have two. Rocío, morning dew in Spanish, the one my parents chose. A name with character, personality, a name with all the wonderful elements of its original language, with an accent, a defiant rolled “R” and a brave combination of vowels that lands with strength.
I love the sound and shape of it, it’s part of who I am.

And Rosie, another one that I didn’t choose either, but that chose me. A name that’s sweet and soft. A name that sounds like music. A name that’s adaptable and most importantly a name that makes me feel like I belong.

A name that everyone around me can pronounce, that allows me to be myself first, that makes people want to say my name instead of avoid it. A name that will, hopefully, open doors.

I could also say that it’s my stage name, but it wouldn’t be fair to reduce it just to that either. Because every single day in this life that I have carefully and joyously crafted, I am Rosie.

I am proud of my birth name. It carries my childhood, history, culture and is the name that gave identity to that little girl who dared to dream.

I will always be Rocío, I will always be Rosie, and everything in between. Just as I am both from here and from there, I am both names and I am still, dynamically and profoundly, me.
