To new beginnings 💫 Artist Bio (strange reading about yourself in the third person but I’m going with it!) Gayle, Founder of Rock & Rebellion AKA Army Barbie 😆 Gayle is a sustainability-driven artist and founder of Rock & Rebellion, a brand born from activism, creativity, and a love of preloved fashion. A lifelong thrifter and storyteller through clothing, she finds inspiration in charity shops, flea markets, and vintage fairs - rescuing discarded garments and giving them new life. Her pivotal moment came in 2021, when she repurposed an ex-army jacket for a rally at Parliament Square. Emblazoned with the word Menovist - a fusion of “menopause” and “activist” - the piece struck a chord with fellow campaigners and sparked the organic creation of her brand. Today, Gayle’s jackets exist as wearable art: each one hand-finished, deeply personal, and sustainably crafted. They carry slogans, messages, and names that transform them into statements of identity and rebellion. What began with a single Menovist jacket has evolved into a movement, where clothing becomes voice, protest, and celebration of individuality. At the heart of Gayle’s work is a commitment to sustainability, empowerment, and authenticity. Through Rock & Rebellion, she continues to merge art, activism, and fashion, proving that a jacket can be more than fabric - it can be a manifesto. . What You Looking At? . Thought I’d (Re)introduce myself - because why not? . I’m Gayle and this is my (very expensive hobby turned) business I’m proud to call @rockandrebellion . I’ve been sourcing & wearing preloved clothing since birth, thanks to my Mum who introduced me to the world of hand me downs/second hand styling/jumble sales/car boots & charity shopping before it was even a thing. So in actual fact feel like thrifting is in my DNA 😅 . I started my brand/business by accident rather than design. Whilst attending a menopause rally in London back in 2021, I wore my own hand painted #menovist jacket in support of the #makemenopausematter campaign when a t shirt I ordered didn’t arrive on time for the event… . On that day I secured my first order/commission as a fellow campaigner wanted to know where my jacket was from. She actually asked if she could buy mine off me - I politely told her no 😆 but said I could design and produce an identical one that she could buy from me. . Did I say I was a collector of all things pre loved? It just so happened I had a stash of used army jackets (like you do 😆) at home I’d sourced sometime before, just waiting for their revival. I’d stumbled across my very first customer without even trying! . Word spread within the menopause community as I wore my jacket @gswmenoflock and I started designing and producing more and more jackets for fellow campaigners… . What started out as last minute bid to wear a statement slogan to show my support for an amazing cause, turned out to be one of the best things I ever did! . Since then I’ve produced hundreds of different designs using statements slogans to help people elevate their business, spread awareness for campaigns or express themselves wearing customised camo with attitude. . Chucking this on here because why the fuck not! Celebrating wearing my £2 men’s shirt bought last week - charity shop. Secondhand September is always a great way to start being more sustainable with your clothing choices if you’re not already but I can’t shake the feeling that even buying preloved has its downside. Are we just perpetuating the problem of too many clothes in circulation even if we are keeping them in circulation? Donating too many clothes to charity creates heavy financial and waste burdens & fuels global textile pollution. Are we enabling overconsumption? The option to easily give clothes to charity may give us a false sense of sustainability, making it easier to justify buying even more fast fashion items in the first place? I often donate to charity as well as using Vinted and try to adopt a one in one out system. But perhaps I’m part of the problem? I know buying clothes or shoes provides me with a dopamine hit, a feel good factor - thanks you ADHD 😅 and I’ve been rummaging in charity shops, car boot sales and jumbles for as long as I can remember so this is nothing new to me. But thinking more about what happens to the clothing the charity shops can’t/wont take has send me down a right old rabbit hole! 🕳️ Will be hyper focusing for a while yet! Celebrating Sustainable Fashion Week with a September Sale 💫 I didn’t realise when I started designing these jackets that I was actually documenting my own transformation. I love taking something that was made to have one purpose and giving it an entirely different life. I wanted them to challenge ideas around femininity, ageing, visibility, conformity and what women are “supposed” to look like. Each piece of hand finished wearable art carries a story. Thinking about starting your own small business? I’m here to help 😆 It’s a great way to meet some lovely like minded people who are also building a business or starting a (very expensive) hobby. Customers are (usually) ace. And can be very loyal. Except the ones who aren’t. Provides purpose. What else would we be doing instead of getting up at the crack of a sparrows arse working 12 plus hour days back to back at a weekend for less than the minimum wage? Means you can take the moral fashion high ground especially around Secondhand September time when bragging about keeping fashion circular/recycled/repurposed/preloved *delete as appropriate Enables you to spend quality time with family. Dragging husbands/partners/kids along under the guise of ‘it will be fun’ works every time. You get to spend way more than you earn on coffee/sweets treats/other people’s products/very expensive hobbies Be proud to contribute to your local economy or a completely different county’s local economy which has absolutely no benefit to you whatsoever 😆 I could go on… Fellow traders what did I miss?!
