Welcome to Rockas!

Our kitchen breathes in heat and exhales rhythm.

Flames rise wild from the stove, smoke wraps itself around the line, and every pan carries the pulse of the islands - fast hands, open fire, and recipes built from instinct, struggle, and love.

Beyond the heat, the terrace glows softly beneath the trees.

Warm nights. Salt in the air.
The sound of laughter drifting through the jungle while the fire continues to dance behind the scenes.

This is Rockas Jamaican Kitchen.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for voting Rockas Jamaican Kitchen as one of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen. We are beyond grateful to be recognized and to stand alongside so many incredible restaurants who made it on this list. Congrats to all!

When we received the news from the @letsplaya.mx of Secretary of Tourism that we were voted into the top category for the Playenses Choice Award, it was completely unexpected—and deeply humbling. To be part of Playa’s ever-growing and evolving food scene is an honor we don’t take lightly.

To our friends, our guests, our extended Rockas family—you fill our jungle terrace night after night with your laughter, your energy, and your love. Thank you for trusting us to take you on a Caribbean culinary journey each evening. Thank you for your kindness, your support, and for always paying it forward.

A little re-introduction: I’m Stephanie—restaurateur, executive chef at Rockas, and the daughter of an unknown cook. My vision has always been clear: to break barriers, bridge divides, and push Caribbean cuisine & culture forward. Thank you to my incredible team, who pour their passion into every plate, every service, every moment we share with you.

FIRE DIDN’T CHANGE HER.
IT INTRODUCED HER TO HERSELF. 🔥

There was once a quiet girl who learned to make herself small.

To observe.
To endure.
To give grace—even when grace was mistaken for weakness.

At sixteen, I found myself trapped in a fire.

I could never have known then that years later, I would stand before flames again…

this time by choice.

Somewhere between fear and fire, cooking became part of my alchemy.

A place to release.
To transform.
To create.

Life has handed me disappointment, loss, love, betrayal, lessons… and people who sometimes mistook kindness for permission.

Life has taught me that protecting my softness doesn’t mean losing it.

Sometimes growth is simply learning where your heart belongs—and where it doesn’t.

Sometimes strength is simply becoming clearer without losing your softness.

My kindness remains.
My generosity remains.
My heart remains.

But I understand now that what I give is grace, never obligation.

Some people are meant to walk beside us.

Others simply hold up a mirror—or meet themselves in ours.

And perhaps there is grace in that too.

Then I look beyond the kitchen…

A terrace full of love, families, friends, lovers.
Laughter beneath the trees.
Hands raised toward this little girl.

And sometimes I still can’t quite believe it.

The quiet girl is still here.

Still learning.
Still soft.
Still grateful.

She just knows the fire differently now.

Once, I survived it.

Today, by Gods grace, I create with it. ❤️‍🔥

And when I look at everything that has grown around that flame…

I think maybe this is what coming back to life looks like.

The meal isn't flashy — it's excellent, consistently, every time, which this sign considers the only metric that matters. Feeding people is practical devotion: the dinner that appears after someone's exhausting week, the meal-prepped containers quietly handed over, the family recipe executed with the discipline it deserves.
There's no announcement, no performance, minimal fishing for praise
— a Capricorn watches people eat with the satisfied 😐
of a job done correctly.
But make no mistake about what the food means: this sign shows love through provision, and a cooked meal is provision in its warmest form. Fed, on time, without drama. That's the love language. Fluently spoken.

So many incredible women have been finding their way to Rockas. Solo travelers, besties, foodies, sisters exploring the world on their own terms.

And every time, my heart smiles a little bigger. ❤️

I’ve spent years traveling solo through the Caribbean. And as a woman, I know that feeling when you walk into a place and just know…

You can relax here. You can be yourself here. You’re welcome here.

That feeling has always mattered to me.

Because Rockas was never meant to be just somewhere you eat.

It’s somewhere you can arrive alone, be received with care, share a laugh, enjoy island food and leave feeling like you’ve found a little family far from home.

Curator. Experience maker. And what I personally like to call…

the IT girl. 💅🏾

Not because she follows what’s happening.

Because she creates her own lane.

The real deal. No copycat energy. Just a hardworking woman building something that is authentically hers—and I respect that deeply.

Every so often Cece pulls up to Rockas for her necessities:

Jerk wings. Rum Punch. THEN business. 😂🇯🇲

Because priorities.

We talk about what we’re building, exchange ideas, encourage each other, and somehow leave those conversations a little more fired up than when we started.

Yesterday she surprised me with a visit, and somewhere between the wings and Rum Punch, we discovered something else about each other…

WE BOTH LOVE GOOD OLD-SCHOOL R&B. 😭❤️🎶

So there she was, bopping in her seat, wings in hand, Rum Punch nearby, all smiles while our songs were playing.

And I thought…

this is sisterhood.

Not competition.

Not imitation.

Two women with their own visions, their own businesses and their own lanes, genuinely wanting to see the other woman win.

We both curate experiences in different ways, but the heart behind them is very similar: creating spaces where women—and our good men too ❤️—can come together, feel safe, let their guard down, eat, laugh, dance and simply feel good.

And by God’s grace, these two Capricorn minds may have a few things cooking for the season ahead. 👀♑️🔥

But until then…

Cece will be at Rockas handling her very important executive responsibilities:

jerk wings, Rum Punch and bopping to R&B. 😂🫶🏾

THE PRICE OF ENTRY AT ROCKAS? 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾

Something beautiful has been happening around our tables lately.

Big families are finding us.

Family reunions. Three generations together. from the UK, Canada, the US and all over the world… sometimes 15, 20, even 30 deep.

And apparently reservations are optional. 😭😂

They just PULL UP.

“Chef, we have a little group…”

Then an entire Jamaican bloodline starts walking through the gate. 😂🇯🇲

Alright then.

MOVE THE TABLES. FIND THE CHAIRS. FIRE UP THE KITCHEN. 🔥

What touches me most is hearing the same words again and again:

“This feels like home.”

Thousands of miles from home, the reggae starts, food covers the tables, somebody starts dancing, everybody starts laughing… and for a few hours, they’ve found a little piece of home on Calle 38. ❤️

And then some of these families come back.

Twice.

Some THREE TIMES during the same vacation.

At that point, you’re not customers anymore.

You live here. 😭😂

I’ve decided there IS a price of entry at Rockas:

Before you leave, everybody owes Chef one thing…

🫶🏾

Kids. Grandparents. Whole families.

And somehow nobody complains about paying. 😂❤️

Fair warning though: your food may contain traces of Chef Stephanie’s sweat.

That’s not salt.

That’s passion and electrolytes. 😭🔥

So pull up with the family. We’ll move some tables, find some chairs and feed everybody.

Just remember…

Oftentimes our guests tell the Rockas story better than we ever could. ❤️🇯🇲

When guests walks through our doors, feels the energy of our little place and decides to capture it through their own eyes.

And this beautiful couple @featuredbyjas @loso06 did exactly that.

They came to eat.

But somehow they ended up making us the sweetest little love letter to Rockas. 🥹

They captured our famous Rasta Pasta in all her glory. 🍝🔥

The cocktails.

The reggae.

The laughter.

The staff.

The energy of our terrace.

And yes…

apparently even our staff pole dancing made the final cut. 😭😂

Because honestly, what would a normal night at Rockas be without a little foolishness?

But watching their reel afterward touched me more than they probably realized.

Because they captured something you can’t really manufacture.

The Rockas vibe.

That feeling when the food is hitting, the reggae is playing, somebody starts dancing, the staff forget they’re supposed to behave 😂, and complete strangers somehow start feeling like they’ve been hanging out together all night.

There was so much joy in their video.

So much love.

And so much effort.

They didn’t have to take the time to film us, edit everything together, showcase our food and our team, and share their experience with the world.

But they did.

And for a small independent restaurant, those gestures mean more than people know.

Every time you post us…

Every time you tag us…

Every time you tell someone, “You have to go to Rockas”…

you’re helping this little Jamaican kitchen in Playa continue doing what we love. ❤️🇯🇲

So to this beautiful couple:

Thank you for seeing us.

Thank you for celebrating us.

Thank you for capturing not only what we serve…

but how Rockas feels.

Rasta Pasta, reggae, ridiculous staff and all. 😂🔥🇯🇲

This one made Chef Stephanie smile.

When Jamaica pulls up 30 deep… you make room at the family table. 🇯🇲❤️

No reservation.

Thirty people.

At least three generations of one Jamaican family walking through our doors together.

Grandparents. Parents. Children. Aunties. Uncles. Cousins.

The whole family tree. 🌳🇯🇲

And somehow…

we were ready.

Tables started moving. Chairs started appearing. The kitchen fired up. Plates began flying through the pass.

And before long, what started as dinner became something much bigger.

They ate.

They laughed.

They danced.

They rolled through the night together.

And I stood there watching generations of one family gathered around our tables, thinking about how beautiful it is when food becomes the meeting place.

Because this is Caribbean culture.

We don’t only gather when everything is perfect.

We gather because being together is the occasion.

We pull up another chair.

We pass the food.

We tell the same stories we’ve heard a hundred times.

Somebody starts dancing.

Somebody laughs too loud.

The children watch the elders.

The elders watch the children.

And somewhere between the music, the food and all that noise…

memories are being made. ❤️

One plate at a time.

One guest at a time.

One family at a time.

And when Jamaicans themselves walk through our doors three generations deep, eat our food, dance on our terrace and turn an ordinary night into a family gathering…

Chef’s heart full. 🥹🇯🇲

To my beautiful new family, thank you for trusting a recommendation and pulling up 30 deep with no warning whatsoever. 😂❤️

We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Because at Rockas, there will always be room for family.

And sometimes…

family arrives all at once. 🇯🇲😂
