Designing a rocket engine starts with the same equations engineers have been solving for decades. The difference is how fast you can solve them.

From Navier-Stokes on paper… to millions of calculations flying by in real time. Simulated with Engine Workbench by RPL.

Look closer, the structure is really there.

First: one transient CFD solve, rendered at 2560×1440 with 840 axial cells dedicated to the plume.

Then: hot-fire footage from Launcher, showing the same kind of shock-cell structure forming in a real rocket exhaust.

The magnified CFD views focus on the nozzle-lip expansion fan, the shock crossing on the centerline, and the second shock cell. No sharpening, generative upscaling, or invented detail—everything shown exists in the solved field.

Mach number visualization. 2D axisymmetric transient. Inviscid cold start. Frozen-gamma CEA. Preliminary design output.

Detail views are approximately 2.5× magnifications using renderer interpolation only. Cell counts shown on screen come directly from the solve log.

From ignition to a fully developed plume, in slow motion.

This CFD startup simulation captures the transient formation and expansion of a rocket exhaust as the engine comes up to operating conditions. Every frame is computed in Engine Workbench, developed by Rocket Propulsion Lab (RPL).

What transient cases would you like to see next?

Near-vacuum plume expansion in CFD next to the real thing.

At high altitude, the exhaust is no longer confined by dense atmosphere, so the plume blooms outward and catches sunlight in a way that almost looks unreal.

Simulation on one side. SpaceX over LA on the other.
