Field Notes on Lapis Lazuli: I was surprised to learn that even though lazurite is quoted as one of the traditional minerals, that it is rarely found in this rock.

We all use shorthand and we know what people mean when they say “lapis”. But if you were to ask our favorite Ancient Roman historian, Pliny the Elder, he would ask which stone you meant. Obsidian, for example, is “lapis obsidianus”.

If I get to name a mineral, I might name it “lapis-ite” which means stone in Latin and Ancient Greek 😂

I’m so excited that RHR has it’s own place on the internet! I’ve been working on getting it up to speed, but let me know what you think!

Field Notes on Bloodstone: This one was interesting because I thought there were only a couple varieties but some bloodstone are simply more popular than others.

I think it’s interesting, too, how ancient civilizations agree on what a mineral was good for. I only found a couple sentences from Pliny on bloodstone. It makes you wonder about all the ancient texts that have been lost to history; it’s cool to see where the thinking was at in earlier times.

According to what I could find, bloodstone has been used for the last 200 or so years as opposed to heliotrope.

Relax with these blue barite blades.

This one is small but one of our favorites in our whole collection. It’s a majestic, little crag and we can only imagine the pocket in the earth where it formed.

Kalie nicknamed it “The Blue Eyes White Dragon” 🐉

Field Notes- Vivianite: I wanted to do this one away from Halloween because it deserves attention the rest of the year too. It’s sometimes called “The Crystal of the Dead” because can form on dead organisms, sometimes inside iron coffins and burial chambers!

That’s wild but as a fan of science (not an expert), I think it’s amazing how an iron ion is removed by the bacteria of decaying matter and then the iron can combine with the phosphorus that’s also present! Definitely a different process than other minerals I’ve talked about on this channel.

It’s amazing how many cool varieties of quartz that are out there! The root beer colored citrine in the video was one of the early minerals I collected as an adult; we call it simply “The Root Beer” 😂

Remember, citrine is a variety of quartz, not a polymorph. That’s something different that we’ll dive into another time.

Relax with this red spinel from Vietnam.

In my younger years, I only knew about most minerals through pop culture, such as video games. In Resident Evil, gemstones were strewn about the world and you would sell them to a merchant for cash. One of them was a spinel and I never thought too much about it.

When I got into mineral collecting, I was super excited to be reminded about this one. I let all my buddies know that “I got the spinel”, but a REAL one.

I recently discovered that people read these captions, so I hope you like my stories 🙂

Do you know how cool it was seeing a bear cub up close?? I was very excited! I totally understand the little girl from the viral video who wanted to pet “that dog” 😂

The valleys with meadows are known as coves so the second clip here is Cade’s Cove, which is one of the most visited places in the park.

Kalie and I have a streak of being sick or injured when we visit nature so we stuck to the beaten path. If that seems to be your speed, you’ll still see a lot.

Some people think all the trees are in the way in the eastern national parks. But we love mountains with or without trees.

When I was looking up information for labradorite a while back, I got excited knowing that I would get to know moonstone soon too. It’s interesting that they are both feldspars with different schiller effects.

It was a little odd learning about so many minerals while doing this channel that moonstone is mainly for jewelry. So many other minerals have industrial uses as well.

Relax with this fluorescent honey calcite.

Even though the glow is weak, it’s clearly red. I have a soft spot for fluorescent minerals even if they aren’t the most dramatic.

I mentioned in the other post with this specimen that sometimes this variety of calcite is called “amber” colored. But in my limited experience, amber calcite glows white and even phosphoresces while honey calcite glows red. Let me know if you can *ahem* shed some more light on it 🙂

This is the first mineral of the 6th Station along Rockhound Road! I think that minerals that come from volcanic processes are especially cool.

People pronounce peridot differently, but I like this way because my brain gets lazy and you’ll hear me say “perry-dough”. That’s probably another name for the singer from Journey’s money.. I know that’s a bad joke 😂
