POSTS STORIES REELS

I NEVER DREAMED THIS WOULD HAPPEN 😱 when I donated a couple of my books to the @BrockleyMax local raffle a year ago!

But this ⚡customer feedback ⚡knocked me out.

I found out he loved❤️ my book thanks to the magic of Amazon reviews (which are permitted if you are a 'verified' purchaser, regardless of whether or not the book came via them).

The mere idea of reading dystopian fiction turns many people off.

Isn't the world depressing enough already?

This reluctant reader was no exception. I'm sure he would rather have had one of the many other (often delicious) prizes donated by generous local businesses.

But then, one day, his TBR pile ran out, and he reached for Rockstar Ending.

When he'd finished the book, he said this alongside his ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ review:

'Well, hooked from page one is an understatement!!...I was swept up with the perfect character development, the frightening consequences of Al in the wrong hands and not least, the Bowie references (my main man).'

When he quoted the lines from David Bowie's 🎸Rock 'n' Roll Suicide to title his review, I really, really knew he'd got it.

The full text is in the graphic, where you can also see that Rockstar Ending is averaging 4.4 stars out of five on the Amazon scale.

People say they like horror because it's funny.

The short films I saw at the @uviewff opening gala on Monday night were witty and extremely clever, in a subtle and wonderfully subversive way.

I've been going to this annual event as a guest of my special friends @bazboxer2022 and @waltondavid1 for a while now. The shorts we saw tapped into many different horror tropes.

Those that worked best managed to get a perfect balance between breathtaking humour and the darker side of the human psyche.

I am not sure I will ever eat a Humbug again.

And who knew that comedy legend and fellow Scouser Jimmy Tarbuck was still alive and gives a fabulous cameo?

The festival on all this week in London. GO!!!!

To commemorate this year's Banned Books Week, I thought I would pick up Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 🔥, a dystopian classic that I am ashamed to admit I had never got round to reading.

It ticked more than one box.

1. The book's central theme could not be more relevant. It follows an enthusiastic, career bookburner, Guy Montag, who after a chance encounter, starts to question the value of his
vocation. This is a risky path to take in brutal times.

2. Fahrenheit 451 has been banned and censored on more than one continent, albeit not as spectacularly as other dystopian books such as Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell or The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

At only 156 pages, it's pretty much a novella, with a small number of stereotypical characters
whose roles in the story are clear-cut.

The fictional future world, plagued by domestic screens through which citizens are encouraged to bond with imaginary 'family' members and question
nothing, is unsettlingly familiar.

And that's before we get into the current trend for real life book-banning.

If you like dystopian stories with eerie present-day resonance, I would certainly recommend
this thought-provoking quick read.

While I didn't form an emotional bond with any of the characters, the story is well-told, pertinent
for our times and highly memorable.

'A book is a loaded gun in the house next door...who knows who might be the target of the
well-read man?'

Captain Beatty in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 (1953)

This made my day.

A new reader, who picked up ⚡ ROCKSTAR ENDING ⚡ at our local arts festival, took the time to send me this note.

Feedback on my books is always welcome.

It's an honour just hear that someone has taken the time to read my work, but even more of a kick when they have enjoyed it.

#hometown - Not so much these days. by @rockstarending

Yesterday I went with my friends from the Orwell Society to visit the Hop Fields where George Orwell laboured while living as a 'down and out'.

Orwell slept in the grounds of the church you can see in the background on a wet and cold August night.

He and his travelling companion Ginger, a young man discharged from the army following an injury and surviving largely by theft, cooked up sausages donated by a local butcher in what has now become part of the graveyard.

We went onto the site of the Spike - a kind of hostel in today's parlance - where he stayed, now a cul-de-sac of expensive houses.

The hop farm is now a vineyard where we raised a glass of English sparkling and heard about the farm's history.

Throughout the trip Quentin Kopp, who chairs the Orwell Society, read excerpts from Orwell's diary documenting his time tramping though Kent. Quentin's father, Georges Kopp, was Orwell's commanding officer in the Spanish Civil War.
