Enjoy heaven my friend.

I met Chad Snow 30 years ago while serving as missionaries in Spain. We became fast and lifelong friends.
Chad passed on last Sunday after a courageous battle with cancer.
I am so grateful that I was able to spend the day with him a week before his passing.
I would like to share something that chad wrote that is incredible.
“THE CLARITY AND INSIGHTS THAT I GAINED AS I HAVE FACED MY OWN MORTALITY THESE LAST FEW DAYS AND WEEKS ARE REMARKABLE AND I’M GRATEFUL FOR THEM.

FIRST, ONE OF THE BLESSINGS OF HAVING A TERMINAL ILLNESS IS THAT EVERYTHING UNIMPORTANT IN YOUR LIFE MELTS AWAY – PEOPLE, PASTIMES, MATERIAL POSESSIONS, ETC. EVERYTHING GETS DISTILLED DOWN TO THAT WHICH IS MOST IMPORTANT WHICH I’VE FOUND TO BE (1) MY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD; AND (2) MY RELATIONSHIPS WITH MY FAMILY AND CLOSEST FRIENDS. AT THE END OF YOUR LIFE, THOSE TWO THINGS ARE ALL THAT REALLY MATTER TO YOU.

SECOND, I’VE THOUGHT A LOT ABOUT REGRETS. RECENTLY, MANY OF MY FRIENDS POSTED A LINK TO A BOOK WRITTEN BY A HOSPICE NURSE TITLED “THE 5 REGRETS OF THE DYING” BASED ON HER EXPERIENCES DEALING WITH PEOPLE LIKE ME LIVING OUT THEIR LAST DAYS. WHILE I AGREED WITH SOME OF HER LIST, I DISAGREED WITH OTHERS, AND I THOUGHT ABOUT MY OWN REGRETS IN LIFE:

1. NOT DEVELOPING TALENTS – I LEARNED HOW TO PLAY THE PIANO AND THE GUITAR AS A YOUNG MAN BUT NEVER PUT FORTH THE EFFORT TO IMPROVE ON THOSE TALENTS. I SPENT SO MUCH TIME ON OTHER TRIVIAL PURSUITS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN SPENT ON MAKING MYSELF REALLY GOOD AT MORE IMPORTANT THINGS.
2. PUTTING THINGS OFF TO LATER IN LIFE – THERE ARE MANY THINGS I’VE WANTED TO DO FOR MOST OF MY ADULT LIFE, THAT I ALWAYS ASSUMED THERE WOULD BE AMPLE TIME. MONEY, AND OPPORTUNITY FOR “WHEN THE KIDS GROW UP” OR “IN MY 50’S OR 60’. THE REALITY IS THAT NONE OF US ARE GUARANTEED OUR LATER YEARS. I DREAMED OF TRAVELING TO NEW ZEALAND, COLUMBIA, AND ITALY, AND WISH I HAD DONE THAT WHEN I WAS HEALTHY ENOUGH.

Al Michaels said it best in the 1980 Olympics. “Do you believe in miracles?”
After the last 25 days I can say that I do! 1 day after being told that Everly would most likely need a dangerous surgery that would keep her in the hospital for weeks, she made miraculous strides and was allowed to continue to heal at home. She has a long road to recovery and we are so blessed that she is well enough to do it at home with her mom, dad, brother and all of us who love her so much.
Watching Everly decline every day was the most difficult thing I have ever experienced in my entire life. The feelings of helplessness were overwhelming. With all of the restrictions we were not allowed to even visit her. I’m not an overly emotional person and I rarely ever get sad. I can say that this was the saddest I have ever been.
Through all of this I learned many valuable lessons.
I was blessed to recognize what is really important. Things, events and people I thought were so important last month, all of the sudden became not important at all.
I was blessed to see the true goodness of people. I had friends, family and acquaintances reach out and offer sincere love, support and prayers. It was amazing to see the goodness of people.
I am humbled that we have been one of the lucky ones so far. My heart hurts for all the families we would see when we were dropping things off at the hospital. There are so many children still in the hospital with temporary and terminal illnesses. I never realized how much pain and suffering some people are going through. I hope I can look at others and not judge them. I don’t know what sadness or pain they are experiencing. Thank you everyone for your prayers and faith for Everly. I hope I can always remember to love others as I have been loved. (John 15:12) taken in Bountiful, Utah by @rockwellrich

31 years of adventures!

Tonya asked me the other day why I loved her. I thought of so many reasons. She’s kind, she’s beautiful, she’s witty, she’s fun, she’s funny and so many more reasons. The more I thought about it, I decided that the reason I love her so much is because I like her so much. It’s easy to love someone . It’s much more difficult to like them. We are always together. I’m so lucky that I like her. I like to be with her. I like to vacation with her. I like to workout with her. I like to go to movies together. I like to go to church with her. I like to walk with her, talk with her and just sit and do nothing with her. If you can’t tell, I really like her. She is easy to love and even easier to like! #happyanniversarytous❤️

I’m going to miss this little guy. Today is the exact reason I told my kids that they couldn’t have a dog. When I was a kid and my dog died I was heartbroken. I knew this day would come and seeing my kids so sad was difficult. Somehow Ariel talked me in to getting her a dog when she was 15. I told my wife that the only dog we would get was a German shepherd or a big dog. Well we got a Shih-tzu. I didn’t even want the dang dog and I ended up loving that little puppy like crazy. I’m glad that my kids talked me in to getting Rosko.
It was tough because it brought back all the memories of my dad passing 4 weeks ago. Hopefully those 2 are up in heaven hanging out and causing trouble. by @rockwellrich

I believe that in heaven you had some say in who your family would be here on earth. I think I must have done some tough negotiating to get my dad. He wasn’t perfect and yet he was the perfect dad for me. He passed from this life to the next today at just before 3am. I know that it is for the best and that he wasn’t living the life that he wanted. Although I know he is in a better place, my heart is broken. I tried to see my dad or talk with him every single day. I already miss him so much. I am so grateful for all the time I was able to spend with him. I am so blessed that he is my dad. taken in Bountiful, Utah by @rockwellrich
