ATTENTION INSURANCE AGENTS:

You keep showing up for someone who stopped showing up for themselves, and then you lie awake wondering what you did wrong.

I was on a call with a group of people who carry other people’s results like they’re their own, and the same guilt kept coming up. If they don’t grow, it must be me. If they quit, I must have missed something. So you coach harder and cover more and hand over hours you don’t have to someone who hasn’t done the first thing you asked.

Honest question, who are you actually protecting when you do that? Because it’s not them. You’re just teaching them that your effort can stand in for theirs.

You can love someone and still refuse to do their part. You can care and still say go to work. You can wait for them without carrying them.

And when they finally show up, you’ll be right there, because that’s who you are, and who you are is good.

The free ebook is where that work starts for you. by @rockygarza

The identity mapping magic.

Day two has been absolutely spectacular. We kicked it off with breakfast at 8 AM and jumped into the deep end right at 8:30 AM. We then spent the next 10 hours unpacking how our brain works, what we think about and what are the limiting beliefs preventing us from getting the places that we want to go.

We defined our core values, identified our streaks and left with a language that really describes what we do as a human being everywhere.

It’s been an absolutely unbelievable journey to watch what has happened in the first 36 hours. A room full of strangers have gone from introducing themselves for the first time to build deep and to make connections with others solely based on who they are not what they’re capable of performing.

Lock in for day three.

You can't watch somebody be honest about their life for two days without it starting to work on yours.

That's what Jenn is describing here. At 48 there's no curriculum and no slides, just sixteen people taking turns saying the true thing out loud while everybody else in the room actually listens. She said every single person who spoke handed her a new thought or a new question, either because she saw herself in what they were carrying or because she was watching how they found their way to the answer.

That second part is the one I'd sit with. Most of us have never watched someone get real room to figure out who they are without anybody rushing in to fix it, and once you see it, you start noticing how rarely you give that room to the people at your own table.

You've got a story for every time you hold back, and every one of them is true, which is exactly what makes them so hard to put down.

Somebody hurt you, or a room laughed, or the last time you said what you actually thought it cost you something real. So you learned to lead with the careful version, and it worked, and now the careful version is the only one anybody gets to meet.

Your past is real and it shaped you. But the day it becomes your reason to stay small, it stops protecting you and starts keeping you from the people who would have loved the real thing.

You keep explaining what you meant to the people who keep telling you how it felt, and somehow you walk away feeling like the misunderstood one.

I do it too. Long day, end of the month, I'm at the sink and my wife tells me I'm being rude, and everything in me wants her to look past what I said and see the guy I know I am on the inside. So I defend my intentions and spend almost nothing owning what I actually did.

And if you're honest, the fight was never about your tone, because what actually stings is the gap between who you said you'd be and who walked in the door tonight.

Honest question, how much would change in your house, your team, your Tuesday, if you spent the same energy owning your impact that you spend explaining it?

You can be surrounded by people all day and still be the loneliest person in the building.

We just finished 48. Twenty people who had never met on Monday afternoon. By Wednesday one of them said out loud that he didn’t feel as lonely anymore, and nobody in that room needed it explained, because every single one of them had walked in carrying the same thing and none of them had a word for it yet.

Here’s what got them there. Somebody said what they actually wanted, and a stranger with no reason to believe him said he had no doubt he’d do it. And you can’t unhear that. Once somebody sees you clearly and tells you the truth about what they see, you have to go do something about it.

You’ve been waiting for that from people who have known you twenty years, and they can’t give it to you, because they’re too busy knowing the old version.

I asked a room of extremely capable people what they wanted and the room got weird.

Not quiet. Weird. Shifting in chairs, looking at the ceiling, a couple of nervous laughs. These are people who run companies. They can tell you their numbers, their five year plan, what their team needs, what their kids need, what their board needs. Ask what they want and they go blank like you asked them something rude.

I think it’s because somewhere back there we decided wanting something for yourself is selfish, so we quietly swapped the question for a better behaved one. What should I do next. What’s required of me. What’s the responsible move.

So here’s the filter I use now. If you can get it with a hire, a raise, a spreadsheet, or a task, it was never a want. That’s a to-do list, and you are world class at those.

A want is what’s still sitting there after the list is done.

Right now, reading this, nobody needs anything from you. Nobody even wants anything from you. So for sixty seconds there’s nobody to answer for. What do you want? by @rockygarza

You're not missing your chance because you're scared of it. You're missing it because your head is already full.

Most of what you think about all day is something you can't control and you're terrified of losing. Your job. What they think of you. Whether the thing you built stays built. So you spend the day guarding, and when something actually opens up in front of you, something that could change your whole life, you walk right past it, because you've got nothing left to notice it with.

You're not broken for doing that. It's just what people do when they're afraid.

But proactive living costs something, and the price is taking some of that attention back. Nobody is going to hand it to you.

So pick one thing you're carrying today that you have zero control over, set it down for an hour, and see what you notice. by @rockygarza

For over twenty years I believed I could build a meaningful life by chasing the next mountaintop. Camp director, pastor, photographer, and honestly even now as a coach, I kept buying the lie that if I could just get to the next big moment, I would finally feel like I'd made it.

It took me a long time to look at the mundane parts of my life and realize that's where the life actually was. Picking my kids up and dropping them off at the bus stop more than 3,000 times, thousands of dinners around the same table, thousands of board games and card games, and the tickles every night before bed.

None of it ever felt like a mountaintop. Stacked together, it's the most meaningful thing I've ever built.

What's one ordinary thing in your week you'd fight to keep?

Once a month I host a free Zoom called Somewhere in the Middle for people who are tired of chasing and ready to see the life they already have. Link in bio.

Who you are is good.
