“Take a chance, leave your comfort zone and make history.” - @rod_strickland1

Rod Strickland reflects on the young kid from New York City who dared to pursue basketball at the highest level. That decision brought him to @oakhillacademy helped shape his journey and ultimately earned him a place on the school’s Lifetime Achievement Award wall.

In this conversation with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Strickland shares the message he hopes today’s young athletes and students carry with them: believe in your dream, embrace the unknown and be willing to bet on yourself.

Before the championships. Before the NBA names. Before Oak Hill became a basketball factory, there was Rod Strickland.

The original Oak Hill hooper put the school on the map—bringing elite talent, swagger, and a standard that helped shape what Oak Hill would become.

From Truman High to Oak Hill to a 17-year NBA career, Rod’s story is bigger than the numbers. He was a pioneer for a program that would later become one of the most recognizable names in high school basketball.

The original deserves his flowers. 🌹

Before Oak Hill Academy became one of the most respected names in basketball, Rod Strickland arrived late, barely unpacked, and stepped into the gym.

A college coach from New York heard Rod was coming and told Coach Smith:

“He’s going to own this gym.”

Within 30 minutes, he did.

That was the beginning of a legacy—one that helped put Oak Hill on the basketball map and inspired generations of hoopers who came after him.

On Sunday, October 25, Oak Hill Academy will honor Rod Strickland with its Lifetime Achievement Award in New York City.

Join us at Lavan Midtown as we celebrate a true basketball legend and support what comes next.

We are proud to introduce DePaul University/ Athletics as a sponsor for Oak Hill Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Awards Gala honoring Rod Strickland.

DePaul’s support speaks volumes because their love for Rod is real. On February 3, 2026, DePaul University retired Rod Strickland’s No. 10 jersey during halftime of the men’s basketball game against St. John’s at Wintrust Arena, raising his name among fellow DePaul greats.

A 1988 First-Team All-American, Rod led DePaul to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his 1986–1988 career, averaging 16.6 points and 7.8 assists per game. His impact as a player, leader, and mentor continues to reach generations across the game.

Now, as Oak Hill Academy prepares to honor Rod with a Lifetime Achievement Award in New York City, we are grateful to have DePaul Athletics stand with us in celebrating a man whose story continues to inspire.

DEFINITION - What Defines Who We Are? - Clothed in Defintion

Clothedinperspective.com - LINK IN BIO

The tan shirt represents the struggle of trying to fit endless interpretations into a fixed structure. Every point differs from the next, serving as a reminder that a single experience can hold many truths.

The Definition Collection represents the paradox of trying to define something with endless interpretations. Perspective can exist as both a noun and a process: something we attempt to define and something we actively move through. Experiences cannot always be contained by a single answer, yet the definitions and meanings we carry still shape how we understand ourselves and continue our journey forward.

The black shirt represents Perspective in motion. Rather than defining what Perspective is, it reflects what Perspective does. It becomes a path forward, representing the meanings and definitions that shape the way we continue our journey. by @rod_strickland1

From Harlem’s City Wide to the national stage. 🏀🎙️

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson is an established NBA Insider, National Broadcaster, and CEO of Scoop B Enterprises Worldwide. With a career spanning nearly three decades; beginning at just 12 years old as a youth host for the New Jersey Nets-Scoop B has built an elite reputation for high-access, player-centric storytelling across major networks like CBS, ESPN, MSG, and Bally Sports.

As a proud Don Bosco Prep (’03) alumnus and media executive, his alignment with elite hoops is deeply personal:

• The Foundation: Introduced to the game at Harlem’s legendary City Wide by his late uncle, Commissioner Billy Rawls. 🗽

• The Full Circle: Growing up reading about Coach Steve Smith’s legendary Oak Hill Academy in SLAM Magazine, Scoop B went from marveling at the program to profiling its elite NBA alumni, including Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, and Rajon Rondo.

Now, as a two-time sponsor of Oak Hill Academy and a supporter of the evening honoring fellow City Wide alumnus and NBA legend Rod Strickland, Scoop B is continuing a long-term investment in the future of the game—honoring his uncle’s legacy and pouring back into world-class student-athletes on and off the court. taken in Oak Hill Academy by @rod_strickland1
