Three years ago I met Dr. Ben Donati in a dead Sears.
Not a metaphor. An actual Sears Hometown Store, gutted, half-built, dust everywhere, the ghost of a lawnmower aisle still hanging around. He was building a hospital inside it. I was building PawPay & DogmaVet, two startups that no longer exists, and I was asking people for things. Ben said yes. He was one of the few who did.
That’s how you find out who somebody is. Not when they’ve got the largest independently owned specialty hospital in the DMV. When they’ve got a construction site and a stranger asking for a favor.
This isn’t a video about medicine. They practice the gold standard over there and you can read about it anywhere. This is about the other thing. The part nobody warns you about when you decide to build something. The dinners you don’t make it to, the birthdays you catch on a phone screen in a parking lot, and in Ben’s case, a tee time he keeps meaning to get back to. Ask him about golf. Watch his face.
We also get into where he came from. The one person who believed him before there was anything to believe in, and who didn’t live to see what he became.
Thanks to George at Nick’s Diner, who has the best banana pancakes in town. My mom had a crush on him growing up.
I’m calling this series “Board In.” Named for Anthony Bourdain, who taught me that we are nothing but the stories we’re willing to tell about ourselves. If you own an independent hospital and you’ve got one, DM me. I want to hear it.

That’s the whole play across veterinary care right now. The name stays warm and local while the ownership answers to investors.

Cladda is independently owned and female-owned. A 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital run by the people who actually own it. When private equity came for veterinary care in Virginia, the FTC had to step in to protect competition. Cladda is what it looks like when a clinic stays in the hands of the team picking up at 2am.
