Tonight, I returned to Bassett High School (Class of ‘05) as someone forever changed by a teacher who believed in me before I believed in myself.

Jennifer Lenihan (1974-2013) was more than an art teacher. She created space for students to think differently, imagine bigger futures, and find confidence in themselves through creativity. Many of us carry pieces of her lessons with us to this day.

What began as an idea to support one emerging artist became something much larger. Through the generosity of the Bassett community, hero pledges, and matching gifts, we were able to award three inaugural scholarships through The Jennifer Lenihan Memorial Scholarship for Emerging Artists.

Congratulations to our first recipients: Sarah Alfaro, Samantha Alonzo-Ascencio, Dominic Serrano.

Thank you to the Bassett High School Class of 2005, Mrs. Monique Guerrero, Bianca Soto, Jenny Winstanley, Cynthia Jauregui, Jorge Benitez, Matthew Schuler, and everyone who helped turn remembrance into opportunity.

On behalf of all of us at Craft Contemporary, thank you for joining us for an unforgettable evening in celebration of our 60th anniversary.

It was a joy to share this milestone with so many supporters, artists, and friends who make our work possible. From the delicious dinner and delightful dessert to the heartfelt speeches and art auction to the surprises on the dance floor, the night was a vibrant reflection of our creative community, and we’re so grateful you were a part of it.

It’s a privilege to follow in the footsteps of so many who have contributed to our legacy, especially our visionary founder, Edith R. Wyle. As we honor the past, celebrate the present with trailblazing artists like Bari Ziperstein, and look ahead, we joyfully imagine the next 60 years of creativity, community, and the transformative power of craft.

Your presence, and your generosity, helped us take an inspiring step into Craft Contemporary’s next chapter.

✨ Craft Contemporary is excited to announce the appointment of Rody N. López as the new Executive Director of Craft Contemporary, succeeding Suzanne Isken who successfully led the museum since 2011 and announced her plans to retire in May. Lopez started in his new position on September 25, 2023.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rody to the museum – he brings with him a keen understanding of art and the nonprofit landscape, and his passion and vision will be critical as the museum enters this next chapter. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d also like to thank Suzanne for her extraordinary leadership for the past twelve years, under which the museum has grown immeasurably,” said Joseph Coriaty, chair of the search committee.

Lopez is a native of Guatemala and has an MFA in Exhibition Design from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), and a BA in Art from Pomona College. Lopez has held numerous administrative positions at museums and nonprofits in the Los Angeles area, in addition to curating exhibitions and contributing to various catalogs and books. Most recently, Lopez was Director of Development and Communications for QueensCare—a faith-based charitable entity offering essential healthcare to underserved communities in Los Angeles—and QueensCare Health Centers (QHC), a Federally Qualified Health Center with five prominent locations throughout Los Angeles County.

“I am honored and humbled to join Craft Contemporary. I welcome the opportunity to join a wonderful community of artists, makers, supporters, and enthusiasts in a sanctuary renowned for holding space for craft and artistic expression” said Rody.

We are honored to revisit the work of Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman, whose designs have a place in our institution’s history as The Egg and The Eye, The Craft and Folk Art Museum, and now Craft Contemporary. Here, their mosaics, textiles, carvings, ceramics, and metalwork meet the contemporary voices of Porfirio Gutiérrez, Jolie Ngo, and Vince Skelly.

Each of them works with deep attention to a single material. Each of them pushes the boundaries of form. Their practices echo the Ackermans’ belief that innovation begins with humility, allowing the material to lead.

This exhibition is also strengthened by our Maker-in-Residence program, which transforms our second floor into a working studio and invites visitors to witness and participate in the creative process. Our partners at Piece by Piece will bring community members into collaborative mosaic making, while Vince Skelly will recreate his studio on site. Their work reminds us that craft lives not only in finished objects but in the act of making itself.

This exhibition is possible because of the invaluable support of the Ackerman family. @ackermanmodern To Laura Ackerman-Shaw and Marc Shaw, and Aaron, Kristen, and Evelyn Meistershaw, thank you for trusting us with this legacy. Your belief in the power of the Ackermans’ story is a gift to this institution and to Los Angeles.
