Seattle, I finally get to play you some of Better Than Never in person. 🤘

I’ve been living with these songs for a long time, and on Friday, October 2, I’m bringing them to Karoo Cafe for a one-night album preview concert. Electric guitars, sounds from the record, and a room full of people that includes you.

Recently I’ve been hosting small dinners I call Masterpiece Dinners, sponsored by Integrity Home Integration.

At every dinner I ask one question: What is your masterpiece?

A company. A piece of art. A charity. A child you raised. Something you built with your hands.

Some people say they’re still working on theirs. A few have said they themselves are the masterpiece — constantly trying to grow and become better.

I believe my masterpiece so far was helping found and produce No Child Sleeps Outside for Mary’s Place for a decade.

That campaign raised $50 million, brought almost every major Seattle company into supporting Mary’s Place, and helped make family homelessness something this community rallied to help.

I don’t think you get to build one thing you’re proud of and spend the rest of your life talking about it. You have to go build the next thing.

Which brings me to the soapbox I cannot get off of: No Cover Shows.

The idea is simple. What if $5 million of existing 4Culture arts dollars became No Cover Show Grants?

Local nonprofits handle booking. Businesses apply to host. Artists get paid.

The public gets free music. At roughly $350 per performance, that’s around 14,000 paid gigs a year.

Imagine King County where free live music is happening every night in every city and neighborhood.

Pay musicians to play in our communities.
Don’t charge people to listen. Execute at scale.

Let bars, restaurants, coffee shops, parks, community centers and transit stations become daily FREE and often all ages stages.

Fremont Friday fills a neighborhood with free music and people move from business to business spending $$$

Last night I went to my friend Hazel’s birthday at @karoo_cafe_seattle near Pike Place. She wanted no cover so everybody could come. More than 120 people showed up, @roem debuted his album, the room stayed packed and the bar sold drinks all night - one musician, two sets.

Would it have looked the same with a $20 ticket? I doubt it.

It sounds small, but if we actually pulled it off? It would be a community masterpiece.

I used to measure success by how busy I was not how alive I felt. Somewhere in between late night gigs and early flights, I realized I was performing productivity not music.

So I stopped.

I started walking again. Running. Lifting. Reconnecting with old friends.

Put the phone down. Picked the guitar back up. Finding the spark.

I stopped listening to the voice that said I’d failed.

Found joy again in small ordinary moments. That’s when the songs came back.

I didn’t set out to make an album… I set out to follow joy.

My first full length album is taking shape. It’s messy, human, and full of life, just like us.
