ad The stair runner of my dreams!

I’ve talked about how I wanted the new hallway to be a quieter, softer space than it was before. As part of this scheme, I wanted a runner which was interesting, but not overwhelming. Beautiful, practical, but also timeless.

Enter Mila Indigo by @roger_oates. The One. So good against the blue paintwork! @roger_oates only use their specially trained fitters for their runners, so they hooked me up with the wonderful @waltonsfinefurnishings in Ilkley, who took care of everything - all the meticulous measuring (thank goodness this wasn’t my responsibility!) and then the fitting which, as you can see, was artistry in itself!

Mila is a woven wool runner, and I particularly wanted wool, not just because it’s luxurious and wonderfully soft underfoot, but also because it’s a natural insulator, which absorbs sounds (important with the family thundering up and down!), and it’s also naturally flame retardant.

Authentic materials, rich texture and delicate design balance are core to @roger_oates artisan heritage. Their runners are woven in the UK with 100% wool yarn, spun and dyed in Yorkshire.

I am thrilled with the result (especially that very pleasing continuation of the runner on to the landing space, where I have 2 small staircases leading off - a tricky area but @roger_oates and @waltonsfinefurnishing knew exactly what to do with it!).

We liken our installation process to 'upholstery for stairs'. In most cases the inherent flexibility of our 100% wool flatweave allows a skilled installer to guide our runners around winding steps without compromising the alignment of the pattern. Mitres can also be sewn for sharper changes in direction, on landings for example.

All of the rugs in our latest Richard Allan x Roger Oates collaboration are hand tufted by our small team in Devon using British wool. Using our specially developed super-fine yarn, we are able to maintain the silky sheen of Richard Allan’s original scarves, even in tufted form.
