“A Blessed Marriage & Divorce”

A personal story, shaped over a lifetime, with @karol.kamel .

What began in 2015 as a project about love, partnership, and the challenges of marriage slowly transformed into something more complex, marked by time, distance, and separation.

After a long and complicated journey, we chose to tell the story as it is, a story that doesn’t only relate to us but can relate to many others around us.

In Arabic, two words translate into “Love”: Hubb and Mahaba. “Hubb حُبّ ” is romantic love, which can fade. “Mahaba مَحَبَّة ” is deeper, a love rooted in compassion and care.
Our romantic love ended, but “Mahaba مَحَبَّة ” remained.

The exhibition & installation is now on view at @rotterdamphoto as part of this year’s theme, Echoes of Silence.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) remains a big issue in Egypt, deeply rooted in old traditions and often justified by distorted religious beliefs. Despite decades of efforts to eradicate this practice, it continues to affect countless women and girls.

Last winter, with journalist Dalia Rabie @drabie we traveled to three Egyptian governorates—Minya, Assiut, and Sohag—documenting stories and efforts of individuals who dare to go against societal norms and fight this practice.
This journey brought back memories from 20 years ago in my home town, Minya, even before I became a photographer. Back then, I was part of a theater group that performed plays, shadow puppetry, and making animation movies to understand & raise awareness about FGM & other societal issues in small villages and communities. At the time, the prevalence of FGM in Egypt was 95%. While campaigns by the government, civil society, and organizations have brought that number down to 87%, there’s still a long way to go. Criminalizing FGM was a success, but true change requires to open the dialogue to be able to understand and go for the change when you are fully convinced and believing in it.

I finished this journey with some hope and a handful of beautiful stories from Assiut,where I met Zanaty, who made the bold decision to break with tradition and refuse FGM for his daughters. to Georgi in Minya who organizes awareness sessions in his village and surrounding areas, to Shadia, who goes door-to-door to educate her neighbors about the dangers of FGM, and finally to Sohag, where I witnessed a heated debate among women in the community—some defending the practice, while others challenged it.

This journey was part of a project documenting the work of @unfpaegypt & @unfpa in these communities. The result was a published book of stories online and in print and will be published in Arabic as well.

The Nile Parade - 2nd Edition مسيرة النيل
We did it again for the second time. A big team of artists, fishermen, and the @verynile team, we made it all together, and I’m so grateful for everyone who put their heart, efforts, ideas, time & money into making it happen.

Challenges after challenges, but it never stopped us, and we kept trying even till the last minute of the event, running around to finish the last security permission.
I have a lot of stories to tell about how persistent we were and how kind the universe was to us in finding the best solutions.

We managed to co-create this together, which is the power of collaboration that I wanted to show and achieve.

The fishermen workshops by Saker ElNour & Yasmine Hussien, 30 fishermen discussing and talking about their Nile and getting the messages out there in the Nile day written on their boats.
The Kids of the Nile Choir, the name was changed by the kids later to Crocodiles of the Nile, composed and sang with @youssra.elhawary
The Production Design of the Nile Parade by @dibbanah Ammar & his team
The @everyday.nile Exhibition was the best chance for the Island residents and visitors to see the Nile differently beyond Egypt.

“My God, How come we don’t celebrate the Nile every year? This needs to happen again and again,” I second that and I beleive all of the team will work hard to make it happen even better next year :)

Giza Zoo

We’re very happy to release Giza Zoo by Egyptian photographer Roger Anis, a new title from L Nour Editions.

Photographed in 2017, the work looks beyond the public experience of the Giza Zoo to the people who cared for its animals every day. Many of the keepers Roger photographed had worked at the zoo for decades, developing relationships with the animals through years of daily care, routine, familiarity, and trust.

The photographs offer a quiet look at this world and at one of Cairo’s oldest public institutions at a moment before its closure for renovation.

Giza Zoo is part of the L Nour Editions 36/50 series and is being released this weekend at Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair.

“What truly concerns me is pollution: that is the silent danger seeping into the river day by day. Protecting the Nile is not the responsibility of any one country alone. It is a collective responsibility shared by all Basin nations.”

Egyptian photographer Roger Anis (@rogeranis) has spent nearly a decade documenting the world’s longest river. Since 2024, he has worked with local fishermen to revive an ancient Nile Parade, turning their boats into a moving celebration of the river and its communities.

The Contrapuntal is delighted to invite you to the opening of our latest project, EverydayNile: Water, Energy, and Food Justice Along and Beyond the Nile River.

The exhibition presents photographic stories in those countries developed by photographers working with communities and researchers on issues ranging from water access and environmental change to food systems, livelihoods and the everyday realities of people living with the Nile.

The evening will also feature a panel discussion between researchers, photographers and project partners, reflecting on the process of bringing scientific research and visual storytelling together.

We will conclude with a reception offering a space for researchers, photographers, students, journalists and the audiences to meet, exchange ideas and continue the conversation.

Funded through The Journalism Science Alliance, a joint partnership led by The European Journalism Centre and Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and implemented with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education this project brings together photographers, researchers and project partners from across three Nile Basin countries – Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt – to examine how environmental and social changes are experienced by communities living along the river.

Shaabi Beaches is a unique photography book by @rogeranis documenting beach culture in Egypt’s public beaches.

The word ‘Shaabi’ in Arabic cannot be translated into one word in English. It references social class, standards, popularity, behaviour, culture, and traditional communities. While economic strain hits many in the country financially, Egyptians always find a way of spending at least one day of summer on the beach. Many travel for hours away from their cities and villages in buses, trains, and all kinds of transportation just to get a feel of the sand on their feet and the salty water on their bodies.

This limited edition self-published book is full of colours, patterns and portraits of people smiling by the sea before returning to harsh inland life.

Water en de toegang daartoe speelt een belangrijke rol in het werk van Roger Anis: hij fotografeerde drinkwatervoorzieningen in Egypte en organiseert jaarlijks de Nijlparade in Caïro.

Water is ook van belang in vrijetijdsbesteding in de zomer, zowel in Nederland als in Egypte. Maar niet voor iedereen is dit even toegankelijk: zo zijn er door de groei van luxe resorts aan zee steeds minder publieke stranden in Egypte.

Anis fotografeerde strandgangers uit alle lagen van de samenleving in zijn fotoserie Shaabi Beaches. Zoals een boer die voor het eerst op het strand is, of een man die drie uur op de motor heeft gezeten voor een dag aan het water. De beelden zijn een ode aan Egyptische strandfotografen, die met een camera, flitser en opvallende decors tegen een klein bedrag badgasten fotograferen.

Water and acces to water are important in the work of Roger Anis: he documented drinking water supplies in Egypt, and organises the jearly Nile Parade in Cairo.

Water is also central to leisure activities in the summer as people seek ways to cool down, both in The Netherlands as in Egypt. However, water is not equally accessible to all: due to the growth of luxury seaside resorts, fewer beaches in Egypt are public.

Anis documented beachgoers from all walks of life for his series Shaabi Beaches. Like a farmer that sees the beach for the first time in his life, or a man that spend three hours on his bike for a day near the water. The images are a tribute to Egyptian beach photographers with their flash cameras and striking mobile backdrops, photograph people in the surf for a small fee. by @rogeranis

The Nile Parade returned on February 14th 2026 for its third year on Qursaya Island, growing bigger and welcoming more than 1,500 visitors to the island. Over the past weeks, many visitors have shared beautiful photos and videos from the celebration on @nileparade that can give you an overview of how the day looked like.

This year we introduced a new element: Art that Moves with the River, a collaboration between 12 artists and the fishermen of Qursaya. After a two-day workshop together, the artists and fishermen spent two weeks transforming the fishermen’s boats into artworks inspired by ancient Egyptian history, Nile folklore, community workshops with the women and children of @verynile, and different visions around water.
The result was a floating exhibition of the decorated boats that became the heart of this year’s Nile Parade.
It happened through an open call where we received more than 170 applications and eventually chose the 12 selected artists.

Not only this but we managed to make new and many collaborations with people and organizations who contributed their time, energy, and creativity to make the parade grow bigger this year.

For me it is always a reminder and a proof that the Nile is still a place that can bring us closer and together, hoping to continue making it happen every year that it becomes a beautiful tradition and a ritual to celebrate the Nile.

Last month, I visited Japan to participate in the International Socio Hydrology Conference at the Universoty of Tokyo, where I presented my visual research about the Nile River.
It was an opportunity to learn more about global water challenges and solutions frominspiring researchers, scientists and engineers from around the world.
I also had the chance to tour various cities in Japan, from Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka & Wakayama.
Japan was a dream destination for me for years, although a few days or weeks are not enough to fully experience it, but I was fortunate enough to have friends & many recommendations to help me along, yet still so much to see & I hope to have another opportunity but definitely not in the summer :)
And the best part was my two new friends in the last picture Rock & Marufuku whom I had so much fun with by the beach & taught me the Japanese word (Omotenashi) おもてなし which means hospitality.
